This might bemuse given the way so many of us like to rail against the "state of the towen"

The flag is granted to urban areas which reach excellence in their evening and night time economies. The campaign to gain the flag involved Waterford Chamber, The Waterford Business Group, the City and County Council, the Gardai and residents. The City was assessed in December by the Association of Town and City Management and met the 30 different criteria needed to gain the status. Waterford is one of only ten locations countrywide that has Purple Flag status. CEO of Waterford Chamber Nick Donnelly told WLRFM News that it's a great boost for tourism and the local economy, however he added that the work really only starts here as it's now up to stakeholders to make sure Waterford City lives up to the Purple Flag status

    indeed
