Entitlements Leasing Query

    Hi,

If a parent leases an out farm to their child(separate herd no) can they keep their entitlements on that land?

And can the child apply for entitlements on the land through the young farmer scheme thereafter?

I guess the parent has to give up their entitlements in order for the young farmer to claim through the national reserve on the same land but just want to check.

    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately I think your last comment is correct... Talking to the Teagasc advisor this morning re the possibility of stacking entitlements on small amount of tillage land to sidestep second crop requirements...not a runner of course.. but he mentioned your position as being in the same bracket, in other words the Dept, at the moment, are not going to allow a parent stack entitlements on land earmarked for a child who then applies to the reserve..

He was very upset at this development as they have lost about three weeks work and as a result he is going to have to go back to farmers and their successors , some of whom are in the process of applying for herd numbers, and have started to put transfers etc in place.

This is just my take on something that doesn't concern me and was mentioned in passing in a hurried meeting so please don't take my word for it, be sure to double check!

In fairness to the dept they are trying to give everyone a fair crack of the whip.

I remember when milk quotas came in and big dairy farmers were able to set the sons up on an out farm with a mickey mouse parlour and the sons were able to get a fair bit of quota, 30-40,000 gals as a new entrant etc. Then a few yrs down the road the two herds were combined, when the old lad retired he was able to get early retirement pension as well.

Presume that pension is gone? Was it much?

Well gone now, I didn't get it myself:o:o I think it could have been 15k a yr for 5 years, only catch was farm had to be transferred to younger qualified person and farm had to expand area 10% by lease or buying a bit.
