Hi folks, I'm looking for a bit of advice please.

I need a new pc and for a few reasons, it has to bought locally. This means I can either go and buy whatever pc world has on offer, or get one built for me by aloca pc repair guy. I'm looking into option B as I think it will work out a bit better.

    1. What is your budget? [€600-ish]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [Multi-purpose. Is hooked up to tv for streaming, some occasional gaming but needs to be able to handle some resource heavy music software (Sibelius, photoscore, reaper/audacity)

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [Yes - 1TB Sata HD, a few smaller HD's and a graphics card - Asus Nvidia GeForce GT 640 Graphics Card (2GB DDR3, PCI Express 3.0, VGA, 2x DVI-D, HDMI, Nvidia 3D Vision Ready) ]

    5. Do you need a monitor? [No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [No]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [No]

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Visa Debit/Paypal]

    9. When are you purchasing? [About 6 weeks, maybe less]

My other requests are that it be reasonably quiet, and be in a horizontal case.

i sent this brief off yesterday and he replied with a spec but I'm just wondering if it's any good. For example, he suggests an i3 CPU. Now my current pc has an i3 and I'm not exactly blown away by it. I know there are a few different versions and updates of them, but I don't really know any more then that so I'm just wondering if you guys could give your opinion on the parts suggested.

Gigabyte H81M Motherboard with 9xUSB Ports which 6 are USB 3.0
    64GB SSD 6GB/s for OS
    Memory 8GB DDR3 1600MHZ
Intel Core i3 3.60 GHz CPU
    24xSata DVD/CD Burner
    Windows 7 x64
Antivirus of choice / Avast / AVG / Bitdifender / Panda
    Open Office Suite

Thanks for the help in advance

Hi - The parts suggested would be about a €400 build if you ordered online and built it yourself. You will pay a premium if you get a local guy to order and build it for you. For a €600 budget though, you should be able to get an i5 cpu. The SSD will make a big difference also and you should get 128gb rather than 64gb within your budget.

I know I know. But as I mentioned, I have to buy locally (it's being paid for with a grant and that is one of the stipulations)

I added up the parts online and they came to a bit over €400, throw in power supply and a few extra bits and there isn't much change from €500. I guess the guy has to make money as well! I guess if I can find the parts online cheaper and send him the links maybe he will do a bit better on price, but I don't know.

Anyway, bearing in mind I have to buy local, can I do any better? My budget isn't strictly €600, I have some wiggle room on that.

well what is your location? Sending him links might be fruitless as I'm guessing from his choice of parts he may have them lying around already.

I suppose is worth a try Explain it is because you want certain parts. Just don't be surprised if he says he has a "supplier "

    Waterford.

I emailed him a while ago and he has suggested if I can sort out my own OS then he can do it with an i5 and an SSD which is starting to sound better to me. I can throw my own sata drive and graphics card into it and it should be a pretty good machine then I think?

Well the Reddit option seems to be best.

What storage is with that? It says in your original post 64gig SSD for OS. Is that it?

There is an i5 machine on PCWorld for sub 600. No ssd though, which I would imagine would be beneficial for multiple samples for reaper et all, though ideally you want two, one for samples and one as a work/os drive!
