    Hi there

Looking into booking a cottage somewhere in Kerry for a week in June. I'm ashamed to say I've never been before so I've no idea where would be nice. We've two very small kids so we want an area thats close to the beach, preferably a nice village with one or two pubs/restaurants for a wander in the evening.

Ballybunion doesn't appeal to us. Is there any areas near Dingle or Tralee that would be suitable?

    All advice greatly appreciated!

Glenbeigh? Near Rossbeigh beach? That might be a bit "open" though. But village has pubs and restaurants and isn't too far from Killarney with the Reeks, National Park, Ross Castle, Muckross House, Muckross Abbey etc.

Caherdaniel. Near the beautiful Derrynane beach, perhaps the nicest in Kerry, though village would not have as much as Glenbeigh.

    Castlegregory and the Maharees.

Would also second Castlegregory - everything is close by and in June it won't have gotten too busy. Beautiful long beaches, forest walks etc plus the necessities of shops etc without having to go to Tralee, Dingle etc but if you want them each is about 30 mins away max. The weather there is also more reliably sunny and drier than most parts of west Kerry, which is not to be ignored :)

Am not familiar enough with Iveragh but have heard very good reports of places like Castlecove, Caherdaniel, Sneem etc so maybe someone else can help out there.

Castlegregory is a good spot, it has plenty there with pubs etc. The Maharees is just further down the road where the beach is and is lovely. It always has plenty of families there. Spillanes bar is in the Maherees and is a very popular place to eat etc, even with locals.

Banna is another option, it is about a 15 minute drive from Tralee, but is right at the beach and very close to Ardfert village and also close to Ballyheigue.

Have a look at Waterville. Nice village, close to Derrynane and Rossbeigh.

Check out Fenit. Its about 12km west of Tralee, stunning little seaside village. A few lovely pubs and restaurants in the vicinity. Even if you don't stay there I would highly recommend visiting.

    Ballinskelligs meets all requirements.

Great blue flag beach, plenty of rental properties within walking distance.

2 great pubs (Cable o Leary's + Rosies) + cafe in the beach carpark (with wifi if needed).

Skelligs chocolate factory a few minutes away (great fun for the kids)

Caherdaniel / Derrynane would be suitable.

Pubs in the Village or on the beach at O'Carrolls Cove. Takeaway which serves great Fish n Chips or go to Sneem, 7 miles for something different.

Derrynane House and walks with a Fairy Trail that will keep everyone amused and try the Harbour for Watersports

Bit longer than 7 miles bet Caherdaniel and Sneem.

Take a look at Kells Bay, there are houses to rent within walking distance of the beach. Thai restaurant in Kells House, lunch in Quarry Restaurant (closes c5pm), Caitin Beaters pub (latter 2 are 2km drive from beach). After that you have a choice of Cahersiveen or Glenbeigh. IMHO Kells is 2nd only to Derrynane as the best beach.

With two small kids I'd stay somewhere near Tralee; Banna maybe? In Tralee if it pours rain you have the aqua dome, two play centres, bowling, the wetlands centre, cinema, you can drive to Killarney for a day, Dingle etc. There's nice kid friendly places to eat out (yummy cafe is a particular favourite of mine). Ballyroe are great for kids with food too.

Just to update you all. We're booked into a cottage near Castlegregory for next week.

If anyone has any recommendations for must-see/do please feel free to suggest them.

    Thank you once again.

Jamie Knox does loads of water sports down in Castlegregory. You'd be better informed if you picked up a copy of Kerry's Eye, it has a full month by month breakdown of all activities.

There's a Sea world place in Dingle too, that's good. Get some ice cream in Murphy's too after. Food festival on in Killarney too.

Thanks everyone. Arrived back home yesterday after a brilliant week touring around. Got the weather too which makes a massive difference!

Only found out about Glentassig wood on Friday night unfortunately. Sounds nice though.

Got in quite a few of the suggestions:
Dingle - Fungi, aquarium and Murphy's all made for a smashing family day out.
Kells beach out near Cahirciveen was gorgeous.
    Slea Head drive
Killarney - Gap of Dunloy, Molls Gap, Muckross etc.
    The Maharees

Went out for a few meals, highlights being Spillanes and The Village Bistro in Castlegregory.

Will definitely be back in the near future. Thanks a million for all your posts.

Edit: we also did the Skelligs chocolate shop, weather was poor that day so it was a handy way to kill a few hours with a drive and afternoon coffee.
Can also recommend the Yummy Cafe in Tralee.....nice spot for lunch.

Completely forgot about saying Spillanes. Which reminds me I have to make a booking.
