Mindfulness and Meditation.

I've recently incorporated mindful practice into my daily routine. Taking 10 minutes before breakfast to focus on body awareness and the overwhelming beauty of our ability to breathe.
Focusing on where we are and how we feel at that very moment. I'll admit to being a sceptic.

My partner introduced me to the idea of mindfulness. 6 months later and I've thrown off many of the ideas that I've formed around my ego.

Has anyone else embraced the simple joy of mindfulness?

I have to have a good routine with meditation and wellbeing, OP.

I deal with snotty financial types in Germany so I need all the calm, patience and understanding I can get.

I shower & take a shít once a day. That's more than enough "body awareness" time for me.

Had to Google mindfulness, each to their own. Don't think I could take it seriously.

This is true. I used to be just Desolate, then I started mindfulness and mediation.

That was a bad error on my part. I spent 6 months learning how to settle rows between people while concentrating on my breathing.

I find it brilliant and would highly highly recommend it.

If anyone is being a snob about it, kindly inform them that they're doing it wrong ;)

It is annoying,up there with the even more annoying "wellness".

The whole living in the moment thing is to be recommended though.

It works. Great for taking the edge off of something you may be worrying over, or anxiety you may be feeling in a specific situation, by refocusing your attention.

    Ahhhhhh Scientology in the workplace.

More and more companies are making their staff work longer hours and instead of extra pay, they get meditation rooms and mindfulness.

    All bollox. I want money.

It's something that, more and more lately, has had scientific research showing positive results lately - so while it sounds kind of new-agey, it's actually got a real benefit:

This is what I've found so insightful. The ability to stop and breathe is an idea that all mammals find useful. Watch a cat or dog breathing. We've lost that ability to connect though.

I work in a high-pressure environment. Lots of money, lots of stress, lots of long hours. It's very enjoyable when in the crux of it, but I've found being able to take 3 minutes out of life to stop and be mindful has had tremendous emotional, physical and mental benefits.

This it the 3 minute practice that I have encorporated into my life. It's based on no religion, no belief system, or ideology.

If your job has long hours and causes stress, you're either in the wrong job, or in the right job but doing it badly.

My wife bought the Mark Williams book that your clip was taken from a few years ago. It has it's good points, but is terribly clichéd.

To avoid stress i'd simply recommend thinking like this: Is it something I can change? If yes, don't worry about it. If no? Don't worry about it.

I used to think like that, and still do for the most part. However, it doesn't account for the unknown or consequences which are common causes of stress as a reaction. If you've a deadline with a huge amount of work due, your stress levels are going to rise if you don't know whether you can do it or not. If not meeting the deadline results in the loss of a job or failing a module etc, then that's going to cause stress. It's dealing with that stress that is easier in this moment rather trying to avoid it.
Also, meditation has been shown to increase brain capacity and focus so these deadlines will be easier to meet.

I had to attend a parents/teacher meeting for the kids yesterday. I know my older lad has poor concentration and finds it hard to stay sitting for long. His teacher - whom I would previously considered a practical ,sensible woman - asks me would we consider introducing him to mindfulness; it would really help his concentration. Now, maybe I'm underestimating the magic of mindfulness; I can see how it would be of benefit to some adults. But a child? He's 8 ffs. He can't think beyond hurling, his DS or what's for dinner. Let him be a child and we'll continue to work on his behaviour.

Is it just so in vogue now that it's becoming a fix-it-all solution?

I've thrown off many of the ideas that I've formed around my ego.
This is the kind of stuff that makes me want to punch the mindfulness crowd in the throat.

I worked in a place before that tried to make me go to this. Basically in lieu of lunch, and I'd have to make up the time I'd then have missed from work because of, y'know, needing to eat lunch by staying late. I told them to jog on, I'd rather just do my work, thanks.

Dogs and cats don't give a sht about breathing. And the only thing they're interested in connecting with is the tantalising aromas of another animal's arse.

This is only entry level stuff though, wait until you get further into it. I'll tell you what, nothing makes you appreciate breathing like having a 240 pound Russian wrap your head in clingfilm and hold it under the water for 180 seconds.

I've incorporated this into my daily routine and it makes me feel just wonderful.

While I practice mindfulness for relaxation and self-discovery, I've also heard it helps people who suffer from anger issues. There are a lot of angry young men posting on sites like this who could do with practicing a 10 minute bodyscan from time-to-time.

Headspace is a great app that has the opening 10 sessions for free. Great way to start exploring the topic.

I try a limited form of it on the subway (subte) here. I don't shut my eyes as it's not the sort of place for ignoring your surroundings but I do try just to listen to the sounds that people and the subway make thinking about nothing and just kind of "accepting" the sounds and sights in the moment.

I generally manage a few minutes before thoughts intrude but it does seem to help manage a fairly hot and unpleasant journey pass more quickly. Not sure if it fits into the mindfulness craze?

Your ego is essentially "the story of who you are" in your head, it's ultimately a fiction that that causes negative emotions, depression and even suicide.

    I concur.

Have you found 10 minutes to be sufficient time to visit the edges of your ego? I would have thought you'd require a bit longer to do that. Hours perhaps?

10 mins might be just enough to relax you. It would take hours of meditation and mindfulness to start addressing and dissolving your ego.

I've noticed a "fitness" craze taking off in the last few years in Ireland, perhaps a "mindfulness" trend will be next, leading to an increase in "wellness" over all. That's good, :) there's a lot of negativity out there.
