    Hi,

I use my car to deliver sound systems. It's come to my attention that I need a goods tax disc to park in loading bays.

Can I register my car as a commercial vechicle so I can get a commercial tax disc? Is it only for larger vechicles?

Only once you convert if from passenger vehicle to goods vehicle.
It's impossible to tax commercially a passenger vehicle.

Also when it is taxed commercially it shouldnt be used for private use like dropping the kids to school , going shopping and so on.

even with a commercial tax disc, you can only load/unload in a loading pay, not park. Shame some of our utility companies don't know that

Out of curiosity why is it not allowed to use loading bays with the car?

You might find something in here.

Its pretty simple stuff though? Place for vans/trucks to unload/load. Parking space isn't suitable for this and a designated place for trucks/vans loading makes more sense and is safer.

Are you properly insured to do deliveries?

there's enough flaming cars in them now without leaving it open for more to park in them! they are for loading and unloading goods and therefore it's logical they are for goods vehicles only. Note they aren't for utility vehicles to park in when mending the phones/water main etc. They are for loading and unloading..... thye aren't for farmers to park in when visiting the city either ...

    Thanks for the link.
I'm not really questioning if it is prohibited to use cars to park for deliveries in loading buy. It surely is.
    The question is - why?
Why they assume people will always be using trucks or vans to deliver products?

Of course. I fully agree with that.

What I don't really understand, is why do they limit it to trucks and vans only.

I understand that some business require a heavy deliveries which come on trucks on pallets, etc..
But some businesses might only need small stuff, which can be easily delivered in a boot of small car.

Why are business owners forced to use vans for deliveries, which could easily be done in small car? And additionally why are they forced to use diesel? (by not allowing them to include petrol in costs for tax and VAT purposes?
This is the part which I can not understand.

Cos you know everyone would just park their cars in them instead of using parking spaces!

    That's from law you linked
    42. (1) Where traffic sign number RRM 009 [Loading Bay] is provided, a vehicle other than a goods vehicle being used for loading or unloading shall not be parked during a period which shall be indicated on an information plate.

I think it's very easy to see if vehicle parked on loading bay is used for deliveries. If it's there for few minutes, and no one around loading or unloading the it clearly isn't.

Right so. Great idea then. Nothing could possibly go wrong with that :)
