What's your preference for a tablet? iPad? Android? Or windows based?

A quick google told me there's ways of getting pics off your camera for all of the above ( although the iPad app was 'coming soon' it was in this thread from 2012 http://photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00ajnB)

If you get a windows based tablet , you have 'full' desktop functionality...

your probably going to need something that can connected to big external flash storage too though if your going to taking lots of big pictures... Depending on where you are traveling sufficiently fast connectivity might not be available to upload a lot of photos

One approach that has worked for me is to use a micro SD card and adapter.
    Something like this one.

Put simply, use micro SD card in the adapter with your camera, then pop it out and slot it into your phone or tablet and then upload from there. It works for me when travelling because the phones and tablets (all android) that my family use have a micro SD card slot.

The two methods I'd look at:

    OTG adapter: http://www.amazon.com/Host-Adapter-Reader-Samsung-Galaxy/dp/B00CYARTL2

*ONLY works with devices that support OTG, not all tablets*

Or the fancier option, Eyefi: http://www.eyefi.com/

You can have the photos sync to the tablet as you take them if you like, or just wirelessly sync them nightly.

I use a Nexus 7 with a D7000, you just need an app to enable OTG - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anda.otgdisk

BTW, make sure you only use approved cards in the camera - https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18128/~/approved-memory-cards---d3200

Some Samsung tabs support OTG, not sure which ones though.
