A friend of mine needs a change of car and saw a 2000 golf 1.4 petrol with relatively low mileage and nct for around 1k. Anything to look out for on these motors.

Burning oil, weak gearbox, dodgy central locking are the main concerns. Lessor problems include water can also get into the rear wiper motor and appear in the boot. Roof drains can get blocked easily causing dampness or water to get into the passenger floor area.

And they are the most under powered car I have ever driven.

There fine, I have one with 110k. Doesn't burn oil (Despite everyone saying they do!) , Have had the wet passenger floor but easily solved.

But god they are slow, But it does the job.

Actually have it about 15months, All it's needed was a Lambda and Oil Switch.

Like anything, Buy a good one with history and it should be okay, Buy one owned by Johnny ragged around the town and it'll have problems.

I've had to get a new gear box, temperature sensor and throttle body in mine over the last couple of years off the top of my head. Also had to get a new exhaust fitted. Nothing but trouble with my one but I don't know if that's a common experience or not.

I know people who had them and plenty of them did burn oil. Yours is an exception rather than the rule.

I drove one for 100k miles, it did burn oil, i just kept it topped up.
Never had bother with gearbox and i am an enthusiastic driver.
The central locking and water in the passenger floor area are the same problem. the PCB for controling the windows/central locking in under the passengers feet .
Rear wiper motor had the same problem as mentioned above.
Exhaust broke occasionally where it entered the back box.

The oil burning and wet floor issue is that specific to 1.4s past 00? when did it improve? cheers as I have just bought an 07 1.4 Golf.

    I would assume so
Regarding the oil burning, just check it once or twice a month and keep it topped up. There is a low level sensor on them anyhow. most cars have this now .
Regarding the wet floor, mine was coming in through the door. the drain plugs in the bottom of the door were blocked. There are drains from under the wiper motor/linkage that get blocked. just clean these out.
Another thing is if you have air conditioning , use it , it dries out the car.

None of this would stop me from buying another one. i genuinely liked the car, mine was well serviced and i knew i could count on it, hop in and drive 100-miles without a bother.
    easy and cheap to service

Thanks for the info , wouldn't' worry to much about using some oil but will check the other issues, particularily the water ingress and elecs.

the problem with the oil burning is if you ask they will tell you it doesnt .
Mine burned a litre every 4000 miles.no problem with emissions
Just check all electrics work and the passenger floor and under the seat is dry, .

A good service history is key to them. People say the engine and gearbox is soft , i serviced mine every 6kmiles and had no issues outside of wear and tear servicable items.

Mate had one-Gearbox went at est 30k-under warranty
Mother had one-Gearbox went at est 120k

Personally did not find it a comfortable car. Back would ache after an 1hr drive and they like their oil.
