Just be aware they're all English imports. I'd go for the 3.0 to be honest, more of them around and roughly the same economy.

E39 525d r 530d is prob the best car bmw built I've owned two of them and I work in a bmw specialist. I can tell you now if u find the right one you won't go wrong.

the advantage with the 525 is obviously E1080 tax v E1494. The 525's as has been mentioned, are UK imports, but every car needs to be judget on their own merits at this stage, when they were imported here, they probably cost whoever imported them a pretty pennny... I would recommend having a mechanic or preferably a specialist check it our prior to purchase...

I've had mine for just over a year and its been fantastic to drive.

Not without its problems (bushings bushings bushings). I'm doing engine mounts, control arms and thrust arms next weekend.

    It's at 235k miles. I'm getting roughly 45mpg Limerick to Dublin M7 @ 80mph

Not great around town though (low 20s).

Realistically though you want the 5xxi. They're really not much worse on economy, especially if you are doing Motorway miles, the diesels still struggle a lot around town.

Are bushings etc. working out v expensive?

There are a load of 535d's at the moment for not a lot of money. You can get them beyond 320 bhp if that is your thing for next to no money and they are a car to go.

Good ones aren't going cheap though. I doubt someone looking at E39 525d's is looking at 535D's :P
