My partner wants to get some therapy for his depression thankfully he has admitted it and knows he needs to talk to someone. Whilst I want him to do it himself and he says he doesnt want help he will look into it himself, I just want to know for my own curiosity what types are better. His issues are past bereavements, low self confidence re weight, work regrets and also some marriage issues I don't know what generic counselling would suit CBT, psychotherapy, couples therapy  I know he has to do this himself and I wont push him but I would just like to understand the difference myself.

As you mentioned depression, he should probably seek a GP first. The GP would be the right person to properly diagnose, provide meds if needed, and refer to the right type of treatment. As far as therapy is concerned, you are abolustely right in that therapy needs to come from the person who needs therapy.
