    Evening all,
As the title says, I was over in UK last month with work. Hired a car.
Got done for speeding - 58mph in a 50mph zone.

    I have two options according to the letter;
    • Accept 3 points and £100 fine
    • Attend a safety awareness course
If I ignore both options what happens?
If I opt to take the points and the fine can the points go on my licence?
If I opt for safety awareness course can I complete in Ireland?

I intend calling them Monday, just wondering if anyone had any similar experience?
    Thanks

The points can't go on your licence. The course is UK only. I think most people just ignore it.

(course costs about 90 quid and is 4 hours!)

The points wont go on your Irish licence, they go on a UK "ghost" licence and would be applied to a proper UK licence should you ever get one.

Do they even do safety awareness courses in Ireland? I've never heard of them.

As for ignoring it, I don't know what happens. Any plans on moving to the UK in the near future?

You only got the letter because you got caught in a hire car. the hire car crowd gave them your details
I know a few lads who were driving irish cars over and were constantly speeding and should have got tickets and never did
As the other poster says one reason for paying is if you are thinking of moving over.
Personally i would probably pay the fine and 'accept' the points . the points cant go on your license.
There would be less chance of sh1t hitting the fan if you are ever over on holidays or the like

Rental companies usually bill you for any fines. Check your statement, you may have already paid the fine and the obligatory processing fee

I often drive my own car over there. Been 'flashed' a few times. Never yet heard anything back.

Not sure how it works with a hire car though, as the rental company will get the fine I guess.

Rental company gets the fine, they look up who had the car and then charge the credit card you used to pay for the car along with an extra fee for having to get off their backsides and see who actually had the car at the time, usually about 80-100 quid, then they supply the police with your details. As fair as I'm aware, if you don't pay it the car hire company will charge your card and pay it on your behalf...

For Parking tickets and the like the Hire company will pay the fine and then charge your card (along with an admin fee).
This is because they as owners of the car are liable for Parking Fines.
For speeding tickets things are a bit different as it's the driver rather than the car's owner who is liable for any fines.
All the hire company can do is pass on your details to ther police. They cannot pay the fine as that would be admitting that 'they' were speeding (and would also imply that they are liable for the points).

    Update on this..
Got a letter Friday from the car hire company.
They included a photocopy of the police notice and informed me they passed my details to the relevant authorities.. Charge of £36 admin for doing this!
