Sports Day

Hi, looking for some advice/help! The secondary school I work in doesn't have a sports day, not sure if they did in the past, but the 3 years I have been there, no sports day. First time I have worked in a school where this is the case. A lot of it has to do with the lack of facilities, but next year we hope to have a new building and better access to green spaces. So I was thinking of trying to organise a sports day for next year, but wanted to lay the groundwork this year.

Only thing is, I have no idea how they are organised. I know in previous schools kids were given a list of events and put down what they wanted to take part in, but how it worked and how the events on the day were scheduled for each year group seems very complicated.

Does anyone have any template, events and how they work their schedule that perhaps they could share with me to give me some kind of start!

    Cheers!

Its quite easy to organise really. We have a set number of events (varies between 6-8 in my school), so establish a rota where each class/year group gets to do every event. List your events in a particular order, start with first event first for group 1, first event second for group 2, first event third for group 3 etc....it actually isn't any hassle if you have a schedule and stick to it !!

Aye get em psyched... Don;t worry too much about the timetabling but do the scoring in such a way that they get at least 1 point for showing up to an event (participation is key!) . Also have close enough points for 1st,2nd,3rd so it'll be a close contest. Usually nerdy maths teacher does the tally at a counting table after each race and adjust the leader board as you go.
Pumping chart hits over loudspeakers throughout the day too(students can play stuff from their Ipods/phones).
At the start have the students parade onto the pitch with their team names/banners/chants...

Form tutors can get pretty wound up about how their class-group is going to win too.
