Which retrofit heating system - oil, pumps, solar?

    Hi everyone,

really looking for ideas here, fairly non-standard situation:

We have a 120 sqm timberframe house, built ca 2003. The only heating in it are a solid fuel stove (no rads or backboiler) and electric panel heaters.

Our heating costs for the year would be:

~ 500 Euro for solid fuel (turf & wood)
~ 450 Euro for electric heating & hot water (excluding normal electricity, and on nightsaver rate)

The house holds the heat fairly well, and the stove is brilliant - when you have the time to maintain it. And there's the problem, we are working fulltime and by the time we get home in the evening, the house is freezing and it takes ages to heat up, nevermind the hassle with cleaning/setting/stoking the fire.

So what are our options in terms of heating? Retrofit rads with oil heating? Heat pump? Solar? What are we looking at in terms of cost for each system (installation costs, cheaper for timberframe)?

Budget is reasonably tight, and it's more about convenience as I dont think our heating bills are excessive (so from financial aspect we should stick with what we have, but I simply want a bit more civilization in this house ;-)) Havent started any other research yet, just getting the feelers out.

    Any ideas & figures appreciated!

    Thanks a mil,

    galah

Hi, it looks like it's going to be relatively expensive no matter which route you go as you are practically starting from base level, ie needing rads, pipe work and heat source.

Oil or gas are going to be the most affordable options to install. Get a few quotes from reputable installers in your area.

For oil my preference for trouble free heating is a Grant vortex boiler.
For gas I always stick with Worcester Bosch although different installers will have their own preferences

Calor gas are well worth a look as they are doing some great deals at the moment with free boiler(Vokera) or the equivalent value of free gas plus interest free finance for the installation cost.

    Thanks a million Neil!

What ballpark would i be looking at for oil? (In the sticks so i'm not sure if gas is an option)

Budget is around 10 k, is that even realistic?

    Cheers,
