Mark Wahlberg lived on liquids + nuts for 6 months. What was your most extreme diet?

    Could you do this?
What’s been the biggest challenge making The Gambler?

“As an actor, living off of liquid for three months and then nuts for another couple of months [to lose and then maintain the reduced weight for the role].

Why did you decide to lose the weight?

“I’d just come off Transformers. I’d also made Pain & Gain [in 2013] with Michael Bay. I played a bodybuilder, so he liked me being big and muscular.
“And in this, I’m playing a literature professor who’s not spending too much time worrying about exercising or eating right.

“I just felt he had to be thin and, well, either that or really overweight and schleppish, and that wouldn’t work!
“That was the easier of the two, to put on weight and just be heavyset, but it wasn’t all that appealing.”

How much weight did you lose?

    “I went from 196lb (14 stone) to 135lb (nine-and-a-half stone).”

    How did you feel?

“I didn’t feel that good. I didn’t have much energy. I needed to use other sources to get energy, as my character is very ‘on’ in certain scenes — especially when he’s in the classroom or in front of an audience.

“So I had natural energy drinks and things like that to give me a boost during a 12 or 13-hour day of shooting. And exercise. Jumping rope every day helped.

“I’ve been up every day at 1.30 in the morning, in the gym by 1.45, out of the gym by 3.30, have a shake, a shower, do my routine, prayer time, then head for the set.”

I dont know how he didnt end up in hospital tbh. What was your most extreme diet or weight loss/weight gain? About ten years ago I bought into the TV ads and went on the Special K Diet. It consisted of a bowl for breakfast, a light lunch or dinner and another bowl later. The weight did fall off but never again. These days some exercise and sensible eating is all I need.

cigarettes and coffee is all.... its like when you hear stars say, Oh I beefed up eating 5000 calories a day and training 7 days a week, 4 hours a day plus martial arts plus weapons training etc etc. oh and I can fly too!!!!

crap!! don't believe half what you read. sure when he came off the juice he would have dropped weight naturally anyway and the rest is just protein only and discipline... you want to hear about potential damage, look up matt damon for courage under fire diet... or Christian bale.

For me - pregnancy is the most extreme diet I've ever been on. I suffered from severe hyperemesis gravidarum, I couldn't even keep water down and spent a good bit of time in the maternity hospital on a drip. I lost almost 15% of my body weight in about 8 or 9 weeks and was bedridden. I drank milk which occasionally stayed down and isotonic drinks frozen into ice cubes. That's pretty much it.

I'm almost 6 months pregnant now and almost back at my pre-pregnancy weight which is great. I'm still taking drugs for it and am sick occasionally but I'm eating fairly normally now.

So, pregnancy is the most effective weight loss tool for me!

My da survives on tea, Guinness and cigarettes.

Fella in work only will eat crisps and mars bars. No other food.

In 1996, Matt Damon scored a role in “Courage Under Fire.” His job was to portray a veteran addicted to drugs. Without a doctor’s supervision, he dropped 40 lbs. in the blink of an eye. He ate egg whites for breakfast and one baked potato per day (plain, of course). He also ate one chicken breast daily – and nothing else. Despite his sparse diet, Matt Damon ran six and a half miles in the morning, and repeated the workout in the evening. Damon’s starvation diet is probably the reason he drank huge amounts of coffee to try to raise his flagging energy levels.

Damon’s drastic diet had its consequences, and the actor later admitted that he regretted the poor decision. During the filming, he barely had to act to portray a drug addict, since his diet left him with hot flashes and bouts of vertigo. Matt Damon became quite ill, and had to be under a doctor’s supervision for a few months, due to the damage to his adrenal glands. The doctor also informed him that he could have permanently shrunk his heart.

At the other end of actors taking their roles a bit too serious there's the famous Robert De Niro weight gain for Raging Bull. He made Elvis in his Vegas years look healthy :D

Lost 33% of my body weight over last 12 months. Was dropping on average 1kg per week.
Has stabilised since start of this year but not easy trying to build the body weight back up.
Especially tough was January and everyone moaning about new years diets and such.

    Ew.

    Yeah, my das old school.

Typified the time when we were driving in his van and he was on his phone, the guy was calling out a number but my da doesn't really know how to use a phone so picked up a piece of copper pipe and etched the number into his dashboard, while driving on the M50.

I can't afford to lose weight, a gust of wind and I'd end up in the middle of the Atlantic.

I dont think his "actor losing weight for a role" will ever be topped.

When I was 18, two weeks in Greece with only €100 as my bank account was wiped the day I went on holiday.

Out every night drinking Ouzo. Ate rice and sugary carbs to stop the lightheadedness. The 40°C weather didn't help. Vividly remember paying 80c for a 1.5L bottle of fizzy drink and downing it because I was seeing stars.

I lost a noticeable amount of weight. Size 14 to a 10. Couldn't go in the pool on the last day as all my bikini bottoms fell off, and they were tight in the first day.

Ate EVERYTHING in sight when I got home.

For the millions he'll be paid for the role I'd have no problem doing the same.

Still not as bad as Christian Bale's transformations between roles for a while there, they can only be described as absolutely traumatising for the body. I even think it'll have negative consequences for his health down the line.

How does one even begin to mentally fight off the hunger that results in eating only a small tin of tuna and an apple per day? Id be climbing the walls!

Or not. I wouldnt have the energy.

And no solids whatsoever? Whatever about an actor doing it for a role, a celeb doing it for vanity reasons is just silly.

Jason Stathom was doing some crazy stuff like this a year or two ago as well apparently. don't really remember what it was though.

I think they just try to do the most extreme thing they can think of, to appear dedicated to what they are doing.

Christian Bale's diet for The Machinist was horrific. One apple and one can of Tuna a day, about 250 calories. Now, imagine that for even two or three days, how ferocious the hunger would be - now imagine that with extreme exercise added into the mix, for an entire four months. He lost 30kg in 12 weeks.

Did 300 ish calories of eating whatever i fancied + 21miles running for 9 weeks and lost 3 stone. Was starting to look to skinny then so stopped.

Its easy enough once you get past the first 3 days.

As for actors going the other way, it's steroids.

They still need to do a **** load of work and have the right diet in order for the steroids to be effective.

Bale could be used as the example, he went from 120lbs (The Machinist) to 220lbs (Batman) in 6 months.

Personally speaking, most extreme diet was porridge for breakfast, lunch and dinner for a week while I was waiting to get paid. Jesus that was depressing.

Stuff like that actually makes me feel sick :( It's easy to forget that some people are so badly off that they can't eat proper meals :(

to loose a pound of weight you need to get rid of something like 3,500 calories

Ran out of money in Melbourne, live on crumpets and spaghetti hoops for a month. Didn't have a scales, but I was the slimmest I've ever been in my life, none of my clothes would stay on, and I had a starvation six pack. Ah it was a grand auld time though.

Some of them definitely cycle some forms of steroids for their transformations. I'd absolutely love to see what kind of quality treatment they get since you just know they're probably provided with excellent medical professionals to do it all for them and with the perfect doses. And then they also get access to the best personal trainers and nutritionists in Hollywood.

I always say if I was rich enough I'd have a nutritionist and personal chef who work alongside one another to make sure I always get the right calories in and also a good personal trainer/lifting partner. Would probably also get a decent physio to do regular deep tissue massages lol. I think anyone would really enjoy exercising and working out at that stage.

I don't think Matthew McConaughey ever really bounced back from Dallas Buyers Club, he's been looking really rough ever since.

Worst diet I ever did was atkins. It was deadly for the first two days, steak for dinner and lunch, bacon and eggs for breakfast. Then it started to go downhill fast. The weight absolutely fell off me, which was surprising seeing as I went almost a week without pooping. That being said, by the 3rd week I noticed my hair starting to fall out when I was brushing it, and the lack of poo was very uncomfortable. Also I'm a huge fruit n veg fan, and 3 weeks without fruit was killing me. One morning I came down for work, and my mum plonked a massive plate of fruit salad in front of me, and a bowl of cornflakes and told me that if I didn't eat it voluntarily, she'd force feed it to me! :D Best fruit salad I've ever eaten! My mum is awesome!

They say one of the quickest ways to age yourself is to lose or gain a lot of weight in a short space of time. How much did he lose again for DBC?

Wine is quite potent though and I'd say he had more than two glasses. What he imbibed wasn't confined to what we saw him drink, I'd say.

Could be an age thing? Bale was 30ish in the Machinist, whereas McConaughey was 44ish in the Dallas Buyer's Club. Maybe his skin, being that bit older, just didn't bounce back as well from the extreme weight loss.

Mark Wahlberg is in his 40s so it'll be interesting to see how it affects him lookswise.

Jared Leto put on something mad like 67lb in 2007 for a role. He also lost 30-40lb for Dallas Buyers Club. Can't imagine what his body has gone through.
