...I assume this comes as no surprise to us (petrolheads).... ?

When 'motor' tax isn't actually MOTOR tax at all

So, motor tax rates for those particularly driving pre-08 cars are in line for big reductions in rates, n'est-ce pas ??

And, as I'm one of those non-IW customers, should my 'motor' tax actually be...........er......free ?

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

it's a nonsense story. You could twin any pair of tax and expenditure and say the same.

To be fair, it was said in the public accounts committee that two thirds of motor tax went into IW. The rest was from the LPT.

But no OP. You shouldn't be getting away with motor tax.....unless i do too ;)

While its true that it comes from the general tax pot, it is a bit suspect that they said two thirds motor tax and the rest from the LPT. Why not say that it all came from motor tax, or the LPT?

It's no surprise to learn that motor tax is not funding roads. And while I don't especially like the new CO2 based system, what pisses me off is the illusion that it's some sort of "green" policy to reduce carbon emissions. Maybe for newer cars, but certainly not for older cars. I pay €710 to tax my '06 car, surely for pre-08 cars they should have introduced a system whereby you pay the cheaper of either the old cc based system, or the CO2 based system? Why not reward people whose pre-08 cars were already lower emissions? I'd be €140 a year better off if that were the case.
