    Hi guys,

I'm looking for an SSD in the 128/256gb range. I like the Samsung 850, but it seems quite expensive. Is it worth the extra money or is there another drive I could look at?

    Cheers.

Crucial MX100 or BX100 are the best value at the moment.

I'd steer clear of the 840 Evos from Samsung, as they appear to have a weird read performance bug.

It's a bug, you won't see it in the specs. I went with Crucial myself on last upgrade. Samsung has better specs on paper but in real world they are not doing well.

You're behind the times. A similar bug has cropped up again on drives that have previously applied that fix.

You will always have bugs and fixes, thats the downside of having a SSD, my A-data P900 works fine btw :)

Not exactly true, have 2 crucials, 1 sammy and a kingston and have had no bugs with any of them.

It is usually worth avoiding models that have known issues, that said the speeds are so fast that even a 20% performance drop wouldnt be noticeable in normal use!

I know many brands have issues, but I honestly haven't had any problems with numerous SSDs across various brands - Samsung, Adata, Kingston, Crucial.

The only brand I've had trouble with are the well documented earlier OCZ petrol/onyx drives, now that was a nightmare. My Petrol failed after 3 months, my housemates failed after two weeks!

I was one of the lucky ones. My first SSD (OCZ Onyx 32GB) failed after something like six years.

My 840 Evo however was affected by the read bug (I didn't notice until I ran a benchmark, truth be told), but seems to be fine since Samsung's first restoration tool yoke.
