    Hi Guys,

I'm looking to spend around 5k on a a car with around a 1.2-1.5 engine. I have been looking at a few Corsas and Puntos etc. on Carzone.

A friend of mine has been telling me that I should spend a few thousand extra and get an 08 or 09 car, because the tax will be cheaper.

Could anybody please quantify what the difference in tax would be between say between an 06 Punto ( around 350 in tax I think) and an 08 (after July) Punto.

Also is there any cars that attract much higher tax than there contempories, in the 1.2-1.5 L engine bracket?

    Thanks a million

If its a small petrol there will be very little difference in the tax rate. it could be dearer as it depends on CO2 of the car
    If its a diesel it will be cheaper. 2.0 diesel 07 is around 710. 2.0 diesel 09 is 280 (audi a4 120)
    Your punto 06 1.3 is 358 1.4 is 385. 08 1.3 is 200 1.4 is 280.

as has been mentioned some cars may be more expensive to tax on the emissions system i.e mainly petrol cars and usually ones that were also cheap to tax on the cc system. Up to a 1.5L on old system is only E413 a year...

There was an '09 imported one with 2350 tax for sale for substantially less than an '07 one on the normal tax.
    Funny.

I don't think they sold any here new post the emissions tax.

I don't think they sold any here new post the emissions tax.

Mazda pulled them from sale in ireland pretty much once the co2 system was announced.

    07 bmw 330 €1494 to tax.
    08 €700 odd

It's just worth looking at what's what you can check the motortax website to find the rate.
    Just put in the reg.

Sometimes the purchase price difference outweighs the savings on tax.

So basically your friend advised you to spend thousands more in order to save a few hundred in motor tax. Should take you about 10 years so to break even so on that deal.

Lol, with friends like that who would honestly need a financial adviser.

Ya I'm always amazed at the price people are willing to pay to save themselves a few quid on tax every year  I had the option of spending an extra like 10k when purchasing my car to buy post 08, even though I would have been saving 800 euro a year on tax that would still take a long time to recoup the costs, I'd never have the car that long to begin with, but granted probably affects resale value also.

    You've a 535d e60 if I remember correctly.
Look at the price difference between 07 and 08 535d models, there's a dropoff of over 10k for 1 year because of "de tax". Madness.

Ya ended up getting an 05 in the end as it was quiet a good deal on the car but 1 year difference and 10k difference in price  . Always painful paying the tax but I knew what I was getting into I guess.

Same here, I had an '06 - purchased pre '08 for the same reason as yourself.
Sold on within 1 year, I can never stay in the same car for too long.

Bought a 2012 diesel avensis last year got the tax renewal form yesterday.56 for 3 months or 200 for year,my 1.6 petrol one was 135 every 3 months!

why would you pay 1.6L by the quarter on the old system unless you were flat broke? secondly your avensis depreciation is costing a lot more than the mickey mouse tax savings v your old car.

I wasn't one of those who bought for cheap tax,had my last car over 7 years and wanted a 12 avensis just couldn't get a petrol one as only 57 sold in 2012.

Ther could be 2 possible reasons for taxing it for 3 months at a time.
one is the car might not be reliable and you are waiting for it to die or might be changing it in 3 months.
Another would have been before the way of declaring a car off the road changed. Not tax it for 3 months, get form signed by guards, tax for 3 months
