Tax is in arrears but I wasn't able to tax it?

Basically, I bought a car with tax that ended the 30th of November on the 9th of January, he sent the log book to Shannon the next day, I only received it on Monday the 2nd of Feb and now I'm in arrears of 70 euro between the 1st of Jan and the 31st of Jan, it even says on MotorTax.ie that the car was changed over to my name and a log book sent out on the 29th of Jan which was a Thursday and I received the book the following Monday the 2nd of Feb, and because of this I need to pay an extra 70 quid?

Not a lot of money but I'm still fuming, how do I get out of this mess as it wasn't my fault at all?

You bought a car on 9th of January. You therefore owe tax for entire month of January.

I stand to be corrected but you have 10 days to declare it off the road.
Out of curiosity did you have the car on the road or was it off the road?

I bought it and it was parked up while I was waiting for the log book to tax it, I don't think it was declared off the road, I bought it from a dealer, he let the tax run out and then sold it to me, I got the log book on the last day of January practically (impossible to tax it that day too) and now I owe 70 because they issued it to me at the end of January but I never received it til feb 2nd...

'If you have just bought a new vehicle or just acquired a second hand one and do not intend to use it immediately, you will have ten days from the date of purchase (as specified in the registration document or the notification of transfer of vehicle ownership) to furnish a declaration of non-use'

I think you will be caught for it . you are over the 10 days .
If you really don t want to pay the 70 euro , the only way i see id transfer the ownership to someone else and transfer it back. otherwise pay the 70 quid.

you dont need a logbook to declare it off the road form RF150 is the form needed

This is a consequence of the new ****ty rules brought in. You could buy a car from somebody on the last day or two of the month and you liable for the tax on that car retrospectively for that month. Suppose the only lesson to be learned here is to only buy a car/ change ownership at the start of a month.

Agree but i would consider the 9th to be the start of the month.
Option b is buy a car with tax. Option C is drive with no tax til the logbook arrives, if you get caught explain the situation and worst case scenario is just pay the tax you were going to pay anyhow.

it's not an extra €70, it's the 70 euro for January. Once the tax is out a month you can't tax it in the normal way and must pay for 3/6/12 months plus the arrears. So if you taxed in January you'd have a tax disc up to end march...if you tax it now, you'll get a tax disc to end April.

that's nothing to do with the "new" rules. It has always been the case that you have to pay the tax back to the first of the month of purchase. (Bear in mind this guy bought on the 9th, not thelast few days.)

You can do it online once you have sent the logbook in to Shannon, keep checking the motortax.ie website in the transactions section.
When you see it has been processed then you can request a PIN online and tax it that way.
You don't need a physical logbook to tax it.

I think some tax offices allow 28 days from date of purchase to declare off the road ....

Its a stupid law from this government. Just change the car into someone elses name for 24 hours and back to wipe it...

yes it's stupid. I wonder how many years it will take to amend it

It can be worked around in some cases, but the car was bought on the 9th, so it should have been transferred a few days later. Part of the problem is relying on the owner to post the logbook. Sometimes they forget to post it. We should be able to transfer ownership online, using the PIN system and the physical logbook can be a formality, or part of history.

I bought a car on January 23rd. The tax ran out at the end of December. I was sending the car to the bodyshop for a bumper repair, so I was not going to pay a months of road tax when the car was not mine for most of the month and wasn't to be used for the rest of the month. So, I asked the seller to date it for Feb 1st and delay posting it until the end of the month. It worked out well. I paid for 3 months tax the moment it changed ownership online. Vlc arrived today.

I thought you get til the 7th of the month before 'arrears' kick in. i.e. If OP can still tax the car tomorrow for 3, 6 or 12 months and the disc will start January.
