Prize Bonds

Found a lot of them in some old stuff today in my house. Have them now nearly 30 years and never won anything on them.

Asked the rest of my family who were there - prize bonds were regularly given as presents by our relations back then - and none of them had any winnings either.

Has anyone on here actually won on them? If so, how much?

€75 a few years back and €50 last March - out of an investment of around €1000 bought in small amounts over maybe 25 years

Strange no one seems to know anyone who has won 'big' on these.

Some lucky person in Laois got a bond this week and won €50K today. I got a bond issued 2 Feb in the YQ series and this one is YR. The draw appears every Friday at 12.30.

Every week Dublin and Cork between them get more than half the winners.

Does the prize remain for the life of the bond holder or is there a expiry date like the Lotto.

My uncle gifted me 100 euro in prize bonds last week and gave me a receipt in a card, how do I check them online? He bought them from a post office so the receipt is from them , just wondering how do I find what number bonds I have?

    An idiotic investment.

    An idiotic investment.

We can't ask be finance gurus!!

To be fair they're hardly investments, but they're effectively arbitrage opportunities so in some ways they're the perfect investment choices.

Just out of curiosity does anyone still buy these? They actually used to be handy presents but the money laundering requirements put the kibosh on that.

Back to the ops question I one £100 years ago when I was a teenager, I was quite pleased at the time. I don't think id ever seem as much money before!

    An idiotic investment.

Not for the person in Wexford who won €50,000 today with a bond bought in the last couple of weeks.

If you have a spare €1000 it could be worth a try for a year. Your 160 bonds enter a draw with over 7,000 prizes every week. If you win one prize of €50 in the year that is a 5% return tax free. If you win nothing you are €20 worse off than the best return you can get elsewhere without putting your capital at risk.

    You should diversify that portfolio.

    Genuine question

How do you know if you have won? Is it up to you to check or do they let you know?

As of the end of March the Prize Bond Fund stands at about €2,254,160,000.
    That's 360,665,600 bonds approx.
In March there was over a million euros worth of new bonds purchased every working day.

Another lucky Wexford person. €1 million winner today with a bond bought in February. Not a bad investment.
