I've searched and searched and I can't find a reason as to why bronchiolitis is so common in children under the age of 2. What makes them susceptible to the illness?

Mods I think this is classed as sharing information, not medical advice.
The old favourite wikipaedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_respiratory_syncytial_virus - 'The Centers for Disease Control consider RSV to be the "most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia in children under 1 year of age in the United States".'

Thank you so much, I'll read up on it. I could find it nowhere!
Not medical advice, it's for a project and I really needed to know :D

Best of luck with it - prob best to use the sources at the end of the wikipaedia article rather than cite Wikipaedia itself :)

Oh yes ;) Lecturers hate Wikipedia more than plagarism!

Main cause is anatomical, young children have relatively smaller airways (bronchioles). Inflammation down there will more likely constrict the airways.

RSV affects all ages, but in older age groups it manifests itself as something less serious like a head cold.
