Nose job as public patient...??

Hope this is the correct thread (mods, please feel free to move if not)

I broke my nose a few years back in a sports accident. My main question is, is it possible to get rhinoplasty as a public patient? From what I've researched, it would cost a minimum of €4000 to correct the huge bump on my nose. I don't have that kind of money, and was wondering if anyone has any advice on whether it could be done on public health or not?

If anyone has any recommendations of any surgeons either, that would be fantastic.

    Nope. Can't be done.

    You'll have to go private.

It is possible . My girlfriends friend had it done. Surgery is performed publicly for aesthetic purposes here . Go and see your gp and tell him how badly it is affecting your life and make a huge deal of it. You would probably be quicker saving the money however.

    I'm calling BS on this.

I broke my nose twice. The only thing you can get done is 'set' back into place once its broken. They will not do any cosmetic changes to it no matter how bad it affects your life. If however, it effects your breathing - you might be in with a chance there.

I know other people who were in the same position. Could smell around corners and they all had to go private.

The tax payer must have spent €32m on imaginary cosmetic sugery so.

The HSE provides and sometimes funds surgery aimed at correcting disfigurement or restoring function lost as a result of accidents, birth defects, or treatment of disease and in some cases due to serious psychological stress caused by such a condition which would be diagnosed by a consultant plastic surgeon.

“The HSE will only undertake cosmetic surgery where a consultation surgeon is satisfied that a valid clinical reason exists to proceed with the surgery for therapeutic purposes.”

    From that article.

The OP would want to have a HONKER of nose for it to be classed as disfigurement or be able to convince a psychologist it's causing them a huge amount of stress.

So my original post is correct. It is possible if it is affecting your life. I accept your apology stench blossom . Like I said I know someone personally who has had it done and it was as a result of being broken a few times from playing basketball .

Haha my nose isn't a honker, I'll admit that. There is a pretty bad bump in the middle of it that was never there previously, so that's the main problem I'd like to get fixed. I got it set back into place a week or so after I broke it, but the doctor obviously did a pretty bad job. How she didn't notice that bump is beyond me.

Unfortunately I know how bad waiting lists are, so I may just have to go private. The guy in the Beacon Clinic is supposed to be the best in the country but they haven't given me an approximate price on what it would cost to fix it. Looks like I'll have to book one of those €250 consultations...

    Do what dor843088 says.

Tell them how terrible it's affecting your life like his girlfriends "friend" did.

Hey :) I'm just going to use your post (dor843088) to explain my situation.

So basically, I got my nose broken in Second Year....It was bleeding like f*** and the doctor just said it will ''resolve'' itself. Anyways, ever since I have had difficulty breathing through my nose and also I have greater airflow in one nostril compared to the other. There is sometimes blood in tissues. You could nearly touch my nose and it would start bleeding heavily. I also hear this sort of clicking in my nose. Now I've been saying it to the doctor for years and I have been told its just allergies #bulls***. Also my glasses cause me problems with it since the bridge of my nose is like a hump. I constantly have red marks from my glasses and my optician says my glasses cannot be adjusted anymore.

My functional reasons for getting a rhinoplasty would be greater than my aesthetic reasons for getting it. Don't get me wrong, it does look ugly and I want to get it fixed.

I presume I would have a good chance of getting it done via the HSE with my above reasons. Anyone else have any experiences similar and got it done with the HSE?

I would need to change doctors also if I've any hope of getting a referral!

I can't posts links or pictures but I'm sure ye get the jist of it

    Thanks for yere help :)
