How's it going all, have a slight problem with my car, popped off the pipe between the throttle body and airbox today, I noticed the inside of the pipe and throttlebody were coated in oil, part of the pipe connects usually to a smaller pipe next to where you put the oil in,but this was broken, is it a simple case of clean everything up, fit a new pipe and it's sorted? My original reason for removing this was i thought the throttle body needed replacing but now might not, the car passed the nct that way although it struggled to hold the idle

There is a few breather tubes and valves. Make sure they all clean. Ive seen them blocked up on golfs before. Do that and clean the throttle body and see how it goes then. If the thrttle body is dirty around the edge of the buterfly valve it will make it idle dodgy

Yeah in and around the butterfly valve was very dirty, I need to replace that pipe also as part of it was broken, I hope all this cures it,worst case scenario replacement throttlebody

That pipe splitting is a very common issue, there is also another one that runs down the front of the engine that splits on them as well. Both will cause running issues at idle.

The oil and condensation and mayo-type substance is normal at this time of year and especially when the pipe is split.

Thanks George, its impossible to get one from a scrap yard, main dealer only, is it common for oil to leak out of the pipe when it splits??? It's branching off to the oil cap, a small area around it is covered in oil

    Yes that is completely normal.

    Yes that is completely normal.

Perfect, thanks for that, some guy told me it could blow the valve stem seals, yet it passed the nct that way, €67 from the main dealer for a new one

this just happened to me yesterday after i was looking to clean the tbody ( audI A3 8L, avu / bfq same engine basically )

it seems to be the crank case breather return link ?

mine was all brittle and it fractured on me , it must have been leaking as well
. had also dumped alot of oil over the years in the air intake pipe and onto the Tbody
and also on to the area around externally.

i taped it together for the moment , hoping to change it the weekend

    i ordered a new one here :
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK4-BORA-AUDI-A3-AIR-INTAKE-HOSE-PIPE-C725-/190580049467?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Car+Make%3AVW|Model%3AGolf|Plat_Gen%3AMK+IV&hash=item2c5f74c63b

its on its way worked out at 34 euro inc delivery , but i will put it on myself.

Hi there, thanks for your comment, yes that's exactly what it is, I got it from the main dealer in the end, no way of ordering online, cost €67 sadly, the throttle body was also heavily coated in oil, as for the engine bay I will need a gallon of degreaser along with a good power wash
