    Guys,

So, my 4TB Seagate drive on my DS212+ is abnormal, I was pleased to receive this today

    20150203_131319.jpg

I was not so pleased with this

    20150203_131324.jpg

I am sending this back, worst packaging I ever seen, the box was rattling around like the ball inside a can of spray paint., padding non existent.

With a 6TB drive at stake I am not taking a risk on this.

I'd send it back to the year 2000, and get yourself an ssd.

Pretty sheet alright, where is that from?

Erm... Did you try the drive at all? Because I've got a bunch of drives sent like that, and they've all been fine.

I've used about ten hard drives in the last few months, and only one was DOA.

Exactly, if it doesn't work by all means send it back. I wouldn't send it back cos of how it was boxed.

Have you used a NAS, do you know how big 6TB is? I know full well abuse every day items get during transit, this HDD box could freely move about in the outerbox, protection inside? zilch (what is in the picture actually was doing nothing but just sitting there). A NAS that runs 24/7 needs a rock solid hard drive, any slight damage at all with almost certainly show up sooner rather than later on it.

There is a chance this box could have been dropped, and I am not taking a chance putting this into my NAS with so much data at stake down the line. I could even hear rattling within the HDD box itself.

This cost £240 give or take and is going back as soon as i get a return address.

This whole post screams that you're doing it wrong. If you arent planning for a drive failure then you're in for a world of pain. Backups and redundancy, then some more backups.

The drive head is retracted in transit, shocks have far less effect. Spin it up and write 10TB to it over the next couple days, check smart for re-allocations, as long as it stays at 0 theres no extra risk in the drive compared to any other.

Actually I'm fully aware of hard drive requirements for NAS, as I've owned one, built two, and helped manage a few others.

Returning the hard drive because it might be bad, without even testing it first, is asinine. But sure, do what you like. :)

Edit: As ED rightly points out, if you're banking on that one drive being completely reliable, you're screwed. Over the course of my two servers, I've had two drives fail out of... around ten or so, I think. It will fail. Not acknowledging and preparing for that is, well, not quite as asinine as expecting a drive to be perfect, but close.

I would rather send it back for another than spend a few days doing data transfers, there is no excuse to package a sensitive hard disk so poorly, I received items of plastic and tape that were much better packaged than this.

true, but dropping a hard drive will increase its chance of failing quite considerable, and there is no knowing the abuse this could have had during its transit.

    "hey Jim, catch.......

    whooops"

this failed after less than a year, (or is due to fail), it is a desktop drive, the other is a more expensive NAS model.

The difference in MTTF between consumer and NAS drives isnt all that huge, just worth noting.

If you wanna be picky go ahead, but its not very logical, as before the head was retracted. Your call though. HDDs are routinely packed in cardboard foldover things, they're sturdy when offline.

different between losing 4tb and not is huge enough to me., whatever about redundancy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

I have literally, actually, just lost the ability to even.

ive dropped a harddrive out of my attic and down a flight of stairs. thats a pretty big fall with multiple impacts. its still running fine a year later. head was retracted as was safely powered off.

The hilarious part you don't seem to get is you could send it back and get a replacement hard drive packaged within an inch of its life that will fail within 1 year anyway.

as i said the HDD itself was rattling inside its own box, its going back to where it came from today.

don't think anyone here has a clue about hard drives, they are bad enough as they stand for reliability, let alone coming sent to a customer with absolutely no packaging or padding whatsoever, in the outer and inner box.

the company apologised which is not of much use to me

why is my NAS rated disk my DS212+ still showing up with no errors?

I find it hilarious myself the way it scans drives routinely for errors and notifies the owner.

    lol

I think people here are in the stone age, does anyone know how many sectors or platters in a 6tb disk.

probably not, don't even think you guys know what a nas stands for.

I will leave you argue about drive heads retracting while I get a better packaged disk.

I'm closing this. It's not related to B&U and clearly looking for a grab of attention.
