Hello clever people i need some advice,
    I have a sapphire Tri-X R9 290X bought a few weeks ago,
last saturday i installed lego the hobbit thru Steam and my son played a couple of hours without problems(highest settings as far as i can remember) shut down normally.Later that evening PC would not boot to windows(8,1) kept restarting finally got an TDR error showing after windows tried to repair. got it started with onboard graphics then uninstalled catslyst drivers, Tried the graphic card again and it booted fine without drivers got the newest drivers from amd and it crashed again while installing, also tried older driver from the install disc same problem.
I changed the PSU it was a corsair 750 watt now its an 850watt model, i have reinstalled windows and its the same, im now using my old HD 6970 which installed fine. Is there anything else i can try before i send the 290x back?

Just a note on this I've had issues with my 290x on the latest drivers, similar to yours, going back a version fixed it. Worth trying this first to see if it fixes your problem before you send it back. (First time I've had problems with drivers related to graphics cards so could be the same)

As deceit said, rollback pretty sure your CD driver would have been.

    Where did you buy it?

Was it an upgrade or part of a new rig?

If it was an upgrade what card did you have before it? And how did you remove the drivers for the older card?

There's a program for uninstalling display drivers. Try that before you return it. I was having problems with my card last year, uninstalling the old drivers sorted it out.

i just tested a fresh build last night on win 8.1 had the same issue with same card as i had to rebuild. i had to go back to 14.9. 14.12 really is terrible i just cant get it working. i had to stop amd processes and remove amd folder after uninstall to get 14.9 on it

Hi all, Komplett.dk are sending me a replacement. description is just that it was defective DOA,although it did work for a few weeks prior to failing.
Anyway it was handled very well by Komplett.dk no fuss or bother and they have a very good return system, they paid for return postage so i am very happy with their service.

looking forward to getting my replacement so my son and i can give them orcs a good bashing.

    Thanks again for your input
