Taking Car from Melbourne to Tasmania - Cheapest Option

Anybody know a cheap way to get to Tassie from Melbourne with a car/van? Spirit of Tasmania is surprisingly expensive (maybe there's a cheaper way to book it? Though a third party website etc?). Or would it be cheaper to fly and rent a car/van there? I'd prefer to take my own vehicle as I can sleep in it while I'm there but I'm open to other suggestions. I'm looking to go end of Feb for about 8-10 days. Cheers :)

I was in Tassie a couple of weeks ago for 8 days. Our preference was to travel on the ferry but for my car and 4 adults on the ferry it was going to cost over $2k.

In the end, return flights and rental of a brand new SUV cost $1150 so that was a no brainer.

    Stunning place, enjoy it!

Flew Adelaide to Melbourne then to Hobart and rented a car for a week over NYE for cheaper than I could have got the ferry for 4 just Melb to Tassie.

Way too expensive that ship, nearly as bad as Kangaroo Island over here $368 return for car & 2 adults for a 45 min trip of <20Km

Cheapest flights were $150 and car rental was $220. I would've had to pay for accommodation on top of that so I ended up just booking my campervan on the ferry for $430 return. Ferry prices fluctuated wildly - it was $100 more expensive about an hour before I booked it for the same trip dates and times! Thanks for all the help :)
