British Royal Marine is world's deadliest sniper
Corporal reported to have recorded 173 confirmed kills during tours of Afghanistan and Iraq, putting him ahead of US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle featured in American Sniper film

He ranged across the province while serving with the Brigade Reconnaissance Force(the same unit Irish RM Robert McKibbin was killed serving in a few years ago) and was armed with an L115A3 rifle which has an effective range of over 1,200 yards.

The corporal, who is still serving, made the majority of his kills during a single six-month tour of Helmand province eight years ago. His actual total of kills could be far higher

At one point the sniper hit 90 fighters in a single day.

.....Interesting article, made public I suppose due to the film out.

No actual sources,a whole lot of "claims" and of course the sniper is anonymous.
If correct, the unnamed Marine’s toll of kills in Afghanistan surpasses that of Chris Kyle, the US Navy SEAL, whose exploits are portrayed in the Oscar-nominated film American Sniper.
A Royal Marine who has 173 confirmed kills fighting Taliban insurgents is the deadliest sniper in the world, it has been claimed.

The identity of the sniper, who is a married father who grew up in the South of England, is a closely guarded secret for fear he will become a target for Islamist terrorists.

    One source told the newspaper:

Sounds like a crock of shiit tbh.

    Great contribution as ever

There is a picture of the sniper blacked out in the article.

Obviously if his ID is known his security will become an issue. There are quite a few BA snipers with 100 + kills, (in this case the guy is a RM).

"The identity of the sniper, who is a married father who grew up in the South of England, is a closely guarded secret for fear he will become a target for Islamist terrorists.
One source told the newspaper: "Only people inside the community know about his incredible contribution — but young recruits are in awe of him.
"He is one of a unique band of marksmen who have done extraordinary things.
"He's not the sort of man to brag. He's very professional and humble, but with a gun in his hands this bloke is deadlier than the plague. He's a legend, a unique breed."
The Ministry of Defence last night refused to comment on the Marine’s record as a sniper, or his identity."

There is a picture of somebody blacked out yes..it doesn't mean it's this legendary sniper.

Sounds like the Scarlettt Pimpernel or Sawney Bean.

A "source" down the pub does not a credible article make.

Where does it say its from a source down the pub ? the snipers picture is published.

    MOD have now confirmed it.

The Marine, who has served for more than a decade, returned to Afghanistan in 2010 during Operation Herrick XIII. The Ministry of Defence last night confirmed that the Marine had killed 90 Taliban in just one day.

He has completed more than five tours, from Northern Ireland to Afghanistan and Iraq – but not all as a sniper. The role of the Bridge Reconnaissance Force in Afghanistan was to surge through designated areas hunting the Taliban up and down the Helmand River.

    Says who?

Theres a pic of a bloke with a beard with a rifle...bound to be several thousand people who look like that.

And I'd be very wary about taking the Telegraph's word for anything of a military matter.

Still a good bit off Häyhä, but very interesting if true especially compared to the american treatment.

90 in one day must have been some serious action though

2008 was one of the heaviest years of fighting out there, if he was defending a Forward operating base the Taliban were trying to over run its possible.

It would make for a very interesting story if they are ever able to release the details, if it was 90 kills from a sniper the total casualties must have been very heavy no?

Wonder if this is the same lad who was apparently responsible for a large number of confirmed taliban killed in a particular year I believe it was something like 50% of taliban kills several years back ,
If I'm remembering a new article correctly

Apparently the Taliban used to try to over run remote FOBs in waves.

Heres an example : Its estimated 200 Taliban were killed in this attack alone.

The Taliban chose July 24 to launch their largest attack against the district centre, in the form of a concerted assault by 300 militants against every side of the base

. The 25-strong Pathfinder Platoon, commanded by Major Nick Wight-Boycott, was primarily a mobile reconnaissance unit, and thus not best suited for garrison duties. However, the Battle Group's resources were already stretched and there were no other units available.
The Musa Qala district centre was a cluster of low cement and mud buildings surrounded by a 10-foot wall. Situated in the middle of the town, it housed the local police headquarters, a prison and a clinic built by the Americans. The Pathfinders took over a building in the center of the compound and emplaced three sangars (fortified posts), one on the roof of their building, one facing east towards the market, and one on a building just outside the compound walls. The tallest building was the prison, which was soon nicknamed "the Alamo" by the Pathfinders, who sited a 50. cal machine-gun on its roof.[14]

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Musa_Qala

The Pathfinders were re-leaved by the Royal Irish and Danish, after 6 weeks of continuous fighting and nearly being over-run.
In the first move, the Royal Irish units and a Paratroop platoon secured a landing zone to the West of Musa Qala for 3 PARAs B and C companies. The 300 men then conducted an advance with fixed bayonets.[3] Meanwhile, a Canadian unit in LAV III armoured vehicles broke through the green zone and assisted in linking up with the Danish troops. The Pathfinders were then able to drive away from Musa Qala where they had stayed for eight weeks, of which three were spent under constant attack.[25]

[3] The garrison had now run out of food and water, and were reduced to drinking goats milk, while their ammunition was also running low, and they had no more batteries for their night vision devices.

Here is footage of Somme company, Royal Irish during the siege, apparently this firefight lasted 10 hours.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkD7HuZRJAI

......So 90 in a day is possible.

During a period of 40 days, they had repelled over 100 attacks,[33]

Indeed there was. It reads very familiar indeed; particularly mention of the RIR & Danish alongside the Pathfinders. May have been "3 Para" by Patrick Bishop, documenting the battalion's deployment to Afghanistan in 2006. I'll need to check as I have the book, but I'm near certain it is.

The annoyance is that the whole Chris Kyle thing isn't taken massively well by folks in the US Military.

Is it too hard to ask people to behave, before I lock this thread too?

I'm willing to bet there's no such Sniper.

This was done before by the Russians *and* the Germans during the battle of Stalingrad.

Each side claimed to have some mythical sniper that could terrify the enemy simply by being in the area.

It's called Propaganda..the first casualty of war is always truth.

Francis Pegahmagabow MM & Two bars (March 9, 1891 – August 5, 1952) was the First Nations soldier most highly decorated for bravery in Canadian military history and the most effective sniper of World War I. Three times awarded the Military Medal and seriously wounded, he was an expert marksman and scout, credited with killing 378 Germans and capturing 300 more. Later in life, he served as chief and a councilor for the Wasauksing First Nation, and as an activist and leader in several First Nations organizations. He corresponded with and met other noted aboriginal figures including Fred Loft, Jules Sioui, Andrew Paull and John Tootoosis.

...and every single shot fully documented - not a single 'possible'.

An article in the Torygraph, using the Sun as a source is many things, I'm not sure interesting is one.

Plus, it's fairly distasteful - I doubt any sniper goes out to 'rack up a score' or even cares what their score is or where they fit in the 'ranking.'

Anyway does the 'score' even matter - I thought sharpshooting / marksmanship was just an element of 'sniping.' Carlos Hathcock (USMC) spent 4 days and nights crawling 1500m through the jungle to avoid detection so he could shoot an NVA general and another US sniper, Bert Waldron took out a VC sniper from 900m - while zipping down the Mekong on an LCM.

Incorrect. He is nowhere near world's deadliest. That record remains firmly in the hands of Simo "The White Death" Hayha who racked up 505 kills in the Winter War with nothing but his modified, Finnish Mosin-Nagant and its iron sights. He also killed those 505 men within 100 days, which likely would've been higher, had the Russians not resorted to calling in artillery strikes and counter snipers where they thought he was... It ended with him being shot in the face by a Russian soldier... Oh, he didn't die... He survived it, and died of old age back in 2002 I think.
