It's the season for duathlons (and for trying to coax people on boards to go to duathlons!).

The Conamara Duathlon, part of the National Duathlon Series, takes place on February 28, in the Gaeltacht village of An Cheathrú Rua (Carraroe), Co. Galway.

The run (3.5km) is short but heart-attackingly steep in places. There is, however, the benefit of being able to distract yourself from the serious pain you will inevitably find yourself in by looking out at the amazing sea views. Plus, there's a downhill...

The bike (21km) takes you past such amazing landmarks as Tí an Táilliúra pub (Brendan Behan is reputed to have taken to urinating in the doorway when he drank there as the door was closer than the toilet), Raidió na Gaeltachta (the greatest national Irish-language radio station on earth) and the townland of Doire Fhearta (so consumed by poitín-making in the 1950s that a local priest commissioned a cross that would face Doire Fhearta in an effort to stop the distillers from their evil ways... you will also get to pass the cross :)).

There will be hot showers and changing facilties, race instructions hurled at you in both Irish and English, and free food and tea afterwards in An Chistin (although no one locally calls it An Chistin... it's Tí Sé).

Sure, you could do something else on the day and risk the possibility of missing out on the greatest cultural and athletic experience of your life, not to mention National Duathlon Series points (yes, points...).

    For more info, go here.
Hope to see you on the day!
    Rónán
