I got a driving ban 12 years ago while living in the Republic, I moved to the UK before it went to court and a bench warrant was issued against me. I am now back living in the Republic and need to change my uk licence to a irish one. Will there be any repercussions?

You may be arrested on foot of the bench warrant against you. Also, once you get an Irish license, a ban may then be enforced on your license, I would assume.

How did you get a ban if it never went to court?

I would imagine the ban was issued in his absence.

OP, something similar happened to my brother. The ban will become active once your license is changed over, if the license expired before the ban did. The ban is only active on a valid license. In the case of my brother, one year of a 2 year ban was applied on his license, without him even knowing about it. Nearly 10 years later, the remaining year was applied to his fresh provisional license.

If it was dealt with in his absence then why would a bench warrant be issued? Usually it's one or the other.

The offense might have been more serious than breaking a couple of red lights and a ban was pretty much guaranteed. Failure to attend perhaps invoked the bench warrant.

Of course, i'm just guessing out loud.

Just apply for a new license like do the test. If you didn't go to court I doubt you were banned! Gaurds might still have arrest warrant though so dont get pulled ;-)

Better off presenting yourself to local gardai. Tell them the situation and see how they handle it.
