Replacing hot tap question

Plumbing not my strongest trait! I need to replace the hot tap in my bachroom sink. Obviously I need to turn off the water pressure first. Is the only way to stop the water pressure in my hot tap to turn off the mains first and then totally drain the system so there is no water left in the hot tank.

    Thanks in advance

There should be 2 valves in the hot press usually about 3 or 4 feet up from the floor, one is for the hot and the other is for the cold.
Don't forget to get someone to video everything and if something goes wrong you might get £250 off you've been framed :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I'll have a look for them first so even though nothing is ever where it should be with the plumbing in my house.

Shouldn't have any problems changing the tap, just make sure you keep the hot water tap downstairs on while you are working on the tap upstairs and that should stop any water coming out of the pipe you are working on if the valve is passing.

Thanks, but the tap is downstairs and is the first tap on the line from the hot tank.

Leave tap running and turn the valves in the hot press until it stops. Count the turns on each valve, so that you can put it back to where it was if you turn the wrong valve. Leave heating off until you find correct valve.

You don't have to drain down anything. As suggested above , leave a hot tap on same level on to avoid drips and have lots of towels on standby.

Thanks. I can leave the hot tap running in the kitchen.

Got it done in the end. Had to drain the system as there was no valve on the hose from the hot tank to the sink. Thanks for the replies

Usually the valve is on the feed from attic tank to cylinder.

Glad it all worked out. Hope you used the opertunity to put an isolating valve in or maybe leave until next time.
