Painting Roof

Hi, just after getting a garden shed built with a plain galvanize corrugated metal roof, not really liking the look of it because it looks very plain. The builder said it can't be painted until after a year because there's an oil coating on the galvanize. Not knowing much about this maybe someone out there may have an idea. Is there some sort of paint out there ? If so what kind ?
    Thanks.

Its not the oil coating thats the problem its that paint won't stick to clean galvanizing. I've painted new galvanized and found that mixing an additive Owatrol helped a lot, did a roof here over 3 years ago and it just started to peel in a couple of small spots recently where the galvanized was really shinny. If you are doing two coats on the roof you could do a 50/50 mix paint and Owatrol in the first coat then use just 10% Owatrol in the second coat.

    Expensive mind!

Another problem with galvanized is that it can get very very hot in the summer with the sun on it so that can be another reason some paints don't last long on it. Traditionally you leave the galvanizing at least a year before painting so the surface gets weathered and a bit rougher so the paint can stick to it better.

And nearly forgot I use a traditional red oxide paint (its more colours than just red) that they sell in Glambia for doing barn roofs, but you'll find it cheaper elsewhere.

Apply a coat of Etching primer first then bobs your uncle.

There is a special paint you can use which is designed for coating galv or aluminium with no priming. It is quite expensive though. I know I can't tell you where you get it here, if it's ok to PM me then I can tell you where you can buy it.

You need to use an etching primer or an etching wash on new galvanise, which is expensive otherwise allow the sheeting to weather for a year. Anything else is a waste of time as the paint will lift and peel due in time due to a phenomenon known as saponification.

Normally you are correct. On fresh Galv, I would suggest washing it thoroughly and applying two coats, without any primer. Depending on the film build, this coating will last up to twenty years, without any appreciable loss of colour. I have actually used it myself, straight on to aluminium windows over ten years ago and it is still almost perfect. I have seen it on galvanised railings where it lasted, so far, over 15 years. It does work.
