ok. picked up to 2mbps but still rubbish. Have dm'ed UPC (too late I know). Will keep fiddling away and see if it sorts itself out

Do you have UPC TV? Is that working ok?

TV and phone are fine. I just followed the steps to change the wireless channel from auto to a specific channel and it sorted it out. No idea what this does. Should I leave it on the number or shift it back to auto at some stage?

Would have been useful if you mentioned wireless on your first post :)

I've a little knowledge, but just enough to be dangerous ;) So is this a permanent fix?

Auto setting depends on the implementation on the router. It 'should' check for congestion on all channels and then select one with the least congestion, as you found out this doesn't always work. You could use a wifi analyser to double check which channel is best for you. Inssider for PC or wifi analyser apps for android/iOS.
