Was the deposit lodged under one of the Government schemes? Legally, it should have been, and there are heavy fines if it isn't. Have you checked your lease?? Check here.

Find that out first, then I can help you with the rest.

Basically we moved into the property 9 years ago & paid the deposit to the letting agency who passed it onto the landlord. During our time the property was sold to the current owner. Before we moved out we mentioned the deposit & the current LL said he would get in touch with the previous LL, which he doesn't seem to have bothered.
Since being in Ireland I have been informed that the current LL should pay as when he bought the flat he took on all rights & responsibilities. I contacted him & he refused. I then contacted a mediation company but they couldn't help either
Its over £700 so quite a bit of money that I could do with
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Then it's off to the Small Claims Court with you! But before you go legal, I'd be telling the landlord that either he ponys up your dosh, or he'll be liable for THREE times your deposit payable to you as he did not register it.

Call the CAB and Shelter to get further advice before making the claim though.

Ok thanks for the advise. Would I need to attend the court case?
Is there anyway of getting around attending?

If you do it via the online service, you won't need to appear.

It's simple enough - I've used it four times successfully
