ex60-5 leaky rams repair

    wondering if its a big job to re do the seals on the main lift ram and the ram ontop of boom of ex60-5, do the rams need to come off or could they be done in situ by just removing from 1 of the ends?

    No rams don't need to come off. You just need to open them and pull the chrome part out and there'll be a big nut on the bottom, take this off and the seals will slide off (remember the order they come off).

    And dont forget to check for the grub screw on the big nut that has a ball inside it. It can pop out unknown to you. Big stilson and plenty of pressure to crack the big nut.

    dont know now, im not a great man for diy, i might try and get someone to do it or was wondering would it be easier to just take off the entire ram and bring it to the likes of burkes in athenry and let them at it

    It may seem like a big job the first time you do it but it's not. Is it leaking at the top of the piston barrel and piston which is allowing the dipping arm to drop? Or is it not physically leaking oil that you can see but the dipping arm is dropping?

    Ok well the big nut has to be opened then to get at the required seals. If you have some ways of lifting off the complete rams then you may be easier to bring them to someone, they are a tad heavy. But if you dont then the simplest method is still to take out the piston out of the barrel and you can bring it to get the seals done.

    if you want to lift off the rams i presume just leave bucket on ground to keep boom supported, i notice the pens holding the rams seem to have some type of round clip holding them in , the clip kinda fits into a groove on pen, do you just lever off that clip and hammer out your pens?

    Yes leave it in such a way that you think its will be easy to manoeuvre around to lift off and lift back on the main boom ram. You will lose a drop of oil so be prepared. The clip you seem to be describing sounds like a circlip which can be *****d off with a big screwdriver.

    Sliding the newly resealed bar back into the cylinder can be fun..tight doesn't cover it..it might be better to chuck it at someone who is used to doing them, seeing as the clips on the pins are a bit of a stumbling block - no disrespect, just you might struggle a bit.

    ya got the seals and had a chap out yesterday, he did one of them but ran out of time to do the other, we had some job to open the ram first off and the then the nut inside, we bent one bar we were using to lever the stencil and i think his stencil is slightly bent also now but got it off eventually
