I'm posting on behalf of a friend who started a new job last month and sees that she's being emergency taxed. we cant figure out why as she gave her new boss the p45 from her old job. now her new boss is telling her she has to go into revenue and sort it out herself. she went in and they asked her for her OLD p45 which she's given her new boss. should she even have been E taxed to begin with?

If the P45 is a 2014 dated one and she only started in 2015 then the new boss is quite possibly correct.

But really all they need is this person's PPS number and they can get her registered as an employee, so I don't know why they haven't just done that.

Simplest thing for your friend to do is get her employers tax reference number as an employer, and contact revenue to tell them she's working there and to issue a P2C to the new employer.

    Hi,

No, it was at the end of 2014 and just a temp. contract which is now ending (4 weeks) so I doubt they will go to the trouble of registering her.

The employer has to register the employee irrelevant of the duration of employment. Your friend should call the tax office and quote her tax number they can put her on a week one cert so she does not get emergency taxed.....

always when you start a new job, get the employer's registered number, ring Revenue yourself and register with the new employer. It saves you having to rely on new employer doing it and you are sure it's done. 99% of employers will do it correctly but unfortuanately, theres always one !

PS tell your friend to request P21 Balancing Statements from Revenue for the last couple of years (4 is the most you can go back) as its quite possible if your friend wasn't registered with the old employer her taxes might not have been on correct rates either. P21 statements would recalculate the taxes/prsi/usc and see if a refund is due (or an underpayment needs to be made).
