    This is a bizarre issue.

Politicians are playing Russian roulette with our lives. Water for domestic use is delivered to a few hundred thousand people, and to businesses in South Dublin / North Wicklow, through a Victorian-era pipe that should have been replaced years ago.

If the pipe breaks / is damaged / collapses, we'll have no water supply.

How will we cook, wash clothes, shower?

The multiple and ongoing Irish Water fiascos will pale into insignificance if that pipe fails, yet still local and national politicians do nothing.

In addition to the foregoing, there is the other issue with the pipework emanating from Vartry - that of seepage of ground water INTO the pipes due to their construction type. This has been known about for sometime now but again nothing done to remedy it. The dangers this poses lies in possible contaminants from industrial, domestic and agricultural pollutants seeping into the water as it travels from Vartry to our taps!

Furthermore, there are residents in part of Delgany that have no water at weekends (when everyone is at home rather than out at work) and who had no water over Xmas because of the holiday! The problem lies with the increased demand over the years due to the number of new houses in the area and the old water system not keeping up with demand. The ludicrous situation is further compounded by a new pump house having been installed at the bottom of Bellevue Hill last autumn to help alleviate the householders problems but .... wait for it ... there's no electricity to operate it!

A row between Irish Water and Wicklow Co. Co. over who should foot the bill to pay for the electricity to run the pump house means that residents have to go without water evenings, weekends and public holidays!

Now, when this issue is raised with developers wanting to build new estates in Delgany or with their architects or even with Wicklow Co. Co. what are we told ........ "We are unaware of any issues pertaining to water supply in Delgany"!

Would it not make you lose the will to live - Ireland 21st Century ... we were better off when we had to rely on the village pump or our own wells! At least we weren't asked to pay for it like fools as we are now!

All in all, a total mismanagement by successive governments and generally government majority led County Councils. A pity we don't elect people with proven records of competency although, in fairness, the openness to corruption is not that easy to gauge. Still Third World to a large extent.
