Opinions on streaming services besides Netflix

    Howdy all. :)

Like a lot of folk, I'm pretty new to the online TV. Joined up to Netflix and abandoned other ways of consuming movies/shows.

Don't know much about other providers though. So looking for peoples opinions on other sites, and how they compare to Netflix.

If you can read this, you're too close!

Are there any other providers that are purely online available in Ireland? I know we can't get Amazon here at all. I know we can't buy films/TV off of Playstation Network either. Xbox store works for films/TV, and you can get stuff off Sky and UPC.

Now TV can be viewed here and is a very good service from Sky.

You'll need to get the box in from the UK though as its not sold here.

I had Lovefilm (Amazon) and Netflix when I lived in England. Netflix content was far superior imo but the Lovefilm user interface was far more intuitive.

There's Crackle if you are in the "US", not a patch on Netflix but it's free and has a few gems. Like the first couple of seasons of the Shield, and decent films come round from time to time, they've also produced a few of their own shows too. Mixed bag, but good if you have budget of zero and don't want to illegally download stuff.

I've been trying out the Roku streaming stick I bought last week and was a bit disappointed to see the amount of channels not available here.

Hulu and HBO to mention a couple. Without a lot of messing with accounts and proxies, the Irish selection is pretty thin.

Id definitely sign up to both of those if it were easier to do so. HBO is probably never going to be a starter here though because of their Sky deal.

That's interesting. Anyone got any experience of running that through a PlayStation (3 or 4) browser?

I'm binning UPC this month in favour of going online TV only (Netflix, iPlayer, WWE Network, Sky Go) but the only thing I'm missing is live BBC channels so it would be great to find a way to access those legally in Ireland through a console.

Snag Films is another streaming service that looks to be free (so far, although open to correction?) Watched first 10 minutes of a film and it worked OK. Not masses on it, but again, free, which is always good!

Edit: So, I thought it was US only, but it has an app on irish google play store (which installs but I can't get a film to play on it). So I'm none the wiser whether it works straight away in Ireland or not.

FilmOn have stopped streaming BBC channels, for me anyway. I get a "This channel is not available in your country" message.

A few other channels I used to get give the same, too.

Does the box work in Republic of Ireland? Or do you need to be in UK..ahem ahem

No ahem ahem lol - Works fine here without the need for anything else. Obviously the BBC, ITV player & ITV Encore won't work thats on it but everything else works without hitch.

I've 2 working simultaneously on the same account for no extra cost.

You can pick up cheaper monthly passes on fleabay but you will need a debit/credit card to set up on their website initially.

AFAIK its a Sky marketing decision not to launch Now TV here rather than any problem with rights (as Sky holds ROI rights to all its programmes). Far higher take up of pay TV here you see, and every person using Now TV is a potential Sky Sports subscriber lost.

Working for me on my PlayStation. Very happy with that.

Don't underestimate the players (i. e. Rte, etc) some of them have great content, all of the are free and many of them are not geoblocked.

It is the simplest, and cheapest alternative and sometimes it gets overlooked.
