Hey, any ideas what this could be? I was driving my Astra no problems at all, parked it up, called in somewhere for ten minutes, got back in, went to start it and it's not even making an effort to turn over. The battery is fine and everything else is working, radio, lights etc, everything but the actual thing turning over. I'm not even sure a push start would help here so any suggestions welcome!

    Starter motor could be gone.

Ooh really? It wasn't showing any signs of giving up at all. It's completely out of the blue that this has happened. I've added a video to the OP anyway :)

I know its anguish at the moment, but dont force your key it wont help, try a tow start to get you home.

    Push start should work.

Give the starter motor a belt of a hammer.

Not stranded thankfully but do you all reckon it's definitely the starter that's gone? Anything other than a belt of a hammer that might sort it? :D

I assume if I push start it, it's still going to have the same problem the next time I try start it?

I second the starter, my car's does that maybe once every 2/3 months. When I give the starter and solenoid a tap with the wheel brace it starts first time.

Thanks for the tips folks. I'll give it a try so fingers crossed :)

As said, most likely the starter, but could as well be the ignition switch or the fuse.

Is the car manual or automatic?

Thanks for the input. The car is manual.

As luck would have it, it started first time this morning, I didn't hammer any start motor, I didn't even open the bonnet, just went straight to start it and it started as normal. I tried it again after a drive and it started again no problem.

I'm glad of that of course but I always prefer to know what the problem was, which maybe I won't be able to find out now and I just have to hope it doesn't happen again!

My vectra did this a couple of times before the starter gave up the ghost completely.
