Hi there, am just looking for opinions please. Am on a realtively tight budget for our wedding later in the year and wonder what the consensus is on music at the reception....Band followed by DJ or a DJ on their own for the night?

    Thanks

A really good dj on their own for the night.

We had just a DJ starting around 9pm. Worked fine. It has to be a good DJ though, who will make an effort and read the dancefloor. It would have been lovely to have a band but any of the ones we saw were no good so we decided not to waste our money on that!

define tight budget, can get a band/DJ combo for around 1500 if you shop around, can get an all night DJ for 400-500 if shop around.

A good band is worth it, an average band is not.

A really good DJ is definitely worth it. sometimes you get both in a combo.

If your budget is < 1000 then get a really good DJ.

Would defo go DJ over band or just one of the other... Bands are mad prices you could try calling to a few pubs and maybe get some session players or watch out for bands playing in pubs but if not just go with the DJ.

we didn't get him but he seems to be getting positive feed back, Explosive DJ he was very nice to talk to and his prices weren't bad..He don't MCing and introduced the first dance all that goes

A good band is brilliant, but a good DJ is infinitely better than a bad band.
If you can't afford a good band, then definitely go for a good DJ.

(PMs with good DJ recommendations (Dublin Area) welcome. I know I've posted in the DJ/Band thread, but haven't gotten to booking yet)

I'd spend money on a really good DJ if I couldn't afford a really good band. I've been at weddings with a less than great band and it hasn't been a good experience.

I did DJ only for my wedding. If your budget is tight, then go for a really good DJ. I've found with wedding bands, more often than not it's a case of "good bands aren't cheap, and cheap bands aren't good" (same goes for DJs)

I've been to a couple of weddings where the bands have been lousy, with the result being that the dance floor was empty most of the night, and the whole afters turned out to be a bit of a damp squib. Interestingly enough, in both those cases, in the run-up to the weddings both brides (one a relation, the other a colleague) mentioned that they'd gotten a real bargain on their bands.
