The simple fact is Top Gear pulls in big number of viewers even if the format feels tired and that's all BBC cares about in the long run.

Yeah, it's all about the numbers. Maybe they will be a bit less 'wacky' following their antics in 2014.

They'd have been remarkably stupid to not re-sign them.

No Top Gear = No money for the likes of Downton Abbey

They need to incorporate some every day motoring slots, show basic maintenance of cars, could easily put it part of their usual mad schemes.

Ah, don't be making a case for no Top Gear, now. :P

They're not even on the same network, of course. The show will go on until something major forces the BBC to act on the now infamous "final warning" Clarkson says he has been given. Or he decides to finally retire, whichever comes first.

That Peugeot piece in the last episode was another one of the cringe-worthy, rubbish time-wasters.

Actually, I think a lot of the issue is that Richard and James don't conflict against him too much. They tend to join in and all it is we are seeing is the other presenters following Clarkson's lead.

Calling for Clarkson to be taken off the show kinda misses the point of Top Gear since it came back 13 years ago. It is about him. It was a desperate attempt to get back on TV after his chatshow failed.

Love him or hate him, he alone is the reason top gear is so popular.
There are serious shows about cars out there if that's your thing.

Can't agree with that. Top Gear was very popular long before Jezza. It probably will be long after he's gone too. :)

Times have changed, and you can go to youtube to get some beardy driving a Yaris telling you about the type of ashtray illumination used.

Fifth gear has the serious car review show thing sorted as well to be fair.

Top gear uk appeals to a wide global audience. Most of that is down to Jeremy Clarkson, and to a lesser extent his two assistants.

True, I'm British and whenever I'm away, the FIRST tv show people talk about is Top Gear, and Jeremy Clarkson. I never watch it so I just smile politely but yeah, he is a household name for sure.

I wonder what Clarkson did to get himself suspended from the show, and where will this go? There's no show this week because of it.

How do the BBC (or any other broadcaster) know the viewing numbers? where do they get them from....and how do they make money from those viewing figures?

    honest questions

The BBC don't, of course. Other broadcasters can use it to inform their rate card, but obviously that doesn't apply to the BBC.

However where the BBC do make money is exploitation of the commercial rights. It is a big money spinner for BBC Worldwide, their commercial arm. Of course they'd have nothing to exploit if no one was watching.

So they get projected figures from a small selected number? ....I might be a bit thick but I still don't really understand how that works

Same way polls are done. In a very simplistic take on it (I'm sure they have much more complicated methods) , take x amount of a cross section of society, ask them what they think. Say they ask 10,000 people whether they like A or B and 62% like A then they take it that 62% of the population like A.
