TRRS earphones?

At least that's what I think they are... I'm talking about these new fangled earphones with three bands on the jack rather the traditional 2 for stereo headphones.

The problem I'm having is whenever I plug them into a device other than the one they came packaged with, the sound is not good, sounds like one of the stereo channels are not connected properly or they are interconnected or something. (The same kind of sound as you get if you don't plug normal headphones in fully)

However, they always come supplied with a button on the cable which sets everything right, but you have to hold down the button to keep the stereo sound coming through properly, because it's not a switch. In other words if I want to listen to my music properly I have to walk around with a firm grip on the cable with the button continuously pressed.

What is the point of this? Is there an easy way of making the button-pressed state the default? Or maybe should there be a setting on my phone or something?
