I was wondering how so many people I know had decent bikes stolen from their homes over the last year or so.

We've discussed this a few times particularly in connection with Strava, where you can implement a privacy zone to stop people being able to track you all the way to your front door

Always been fearful of this as well. Have a privacy zone on and don't start the Garmin till I'm out onto the main road.
