Hitachi 42 Inch Full HD Freeview HD Smart LED TV- €354

If I was going down the smart route I wouldn't go hitachi, also it has no built in wifi so you'll have to buy a dongle or home plugs on top of that price.

50hz on a 42inch tv would let the picture down too in my opinion.

    Not really imo.

Hitachi do not have a good rep and the specs of this TV are not great.

If this matters to you, Hitachi tvs come from the same factory as Finlux and other low cost brands, they're not really Hitachi.

They've been trying to shift those for some time now so I suspect they're not good quality at all. Just a month ago it was only €299

Thanks for this .. I reckon ill give it a miss so

    Can you recommend any tvs?

I got it when it was €299. Very good value, Very narrow bezel around it so it seems bigger than it is. It could do with 2 extra hdmi sockets. I got a Simple vsky®HDMI 3 Port Switch Superb Quality Full HD 1080p HUB HDMI v1.3b (Latest) 2.5Gbps HD-DVD PS3 Xbox360 Blu-Ray Audio & Video 3 x Input 1 x Output Ultra High Performance--Factory Seller from Amazon UK and it works a treat. Very happy with that tv so far.

    You're talking a starting price of about €545 for a 100hz.

If i put last years models in front of ya, You wouldnt tell the difference on a decent panel.

The smart sony isin't either, more lies, the smart lg actually says in the description that's it's only a 50 aswell. It's a wonder.

The majority of people fall for this crap.

Again though, unless you know what to look for, you won't see a difference really on a good new panel.

Here's one I think on a quick look for 500, not bad.

    http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-13-42LB630

Snap that up if you're after a TV, my google skills say it's been down around 430 at some stage before the xmas so....

Is now a good time to buy a TV? I am thinking of getting a 40/42 inch one. Am in no rush, not interested in a Smart TV. Some of the models above look decent for a budget of around 400 or less. Do you reckon these prices will go back up again, or stay down for a while / get cheaper as people tend towards Smart TVs

I got a 39" samsung 5 series smart tv in power city last week for 399. reduced from 549.they are doing a lot of clearance prices on tv's instore at the moment.

Currys have a good deal today on a 42" LG 100Hz (not smart) for €369 - seems like a good buy. Sorry can't post link but it's LG 42LB561V 42” LED TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭MBSnr

The samsung-ue40h5000 in Currys is not a bad TV for the price (I paid 359) - it's non SMART but a good few of the SMART functions don't work here anyhow (BBC iplayer etc) or are irrelevant to me. It's only 50Hz refresh (not 100Hz due to 'marketing' as Jumper says). The thing that swung it for me is that it has great sound from the speakers with plenty of customisable settings to get the best possible picture out of it (if you are so inclined). I can't complain.

I avoided the LG 42LB561V for two reasons - some reviews didn't rate it and also it was larger than I wanted with issues about fitting it on a corner unit as the feet are wide apart (no central stand).

EDIT just seen it's gone back up from the price I paid......

I have the Samsung smart version and the wifi connection keeps breaking on it total disaster. I spent several hours trying all fixes including router and I have come to conclusion from studying the issue on the net that Samsung have serious flaws on the smart TVs and I've given up on it being sorted.

The tv smart feature just keeps going round in circles stating internet connection lost, repaired,, lost, repaired over and over again.

currys is doing a panasonic 39 inch for 299 euro

I got the Samsung UE40H5500 40 inch in Tesco Extra Wexford yesterday for 399. I have to say I'm very happy with it, gets great reviews http://www.trustedreviews.com/samsung-ue40h5500-review
and the smart tv functions on it are really snappy with the quad core processor. I'll attach some images if it helps anyone, they also had a 48 inch Toshiba 3D full HD (no glasses) for 449. But the 40 inch was perfect for my needs plus I think Samsungs are best for "smart" functions.
Maybe it's not bargain of the year but it might help someone.
    Cheers

That is a bargain as the non Smart UE40H5000 was only 40 Euro cheaper.... Oh well not to worry as the nearest Tesco Extra is over 80 miles from me anyhow....

Stop buying smart TV's,another fad, along with 4k, curved TVs and whatever next, a listening tv...

Buy a Chromecast for 39 Euro's, turns any TV into a smart tv,stays connected to WiFi and is very easy to work.

What exactly are the features of a smart tv?

+1 on that. I've a Samsung smart TV and rarely if ever use the smart apps ( most are crap anyway)

    ...whatever next, a listening tv?
We have those already. (here's how to turn it off...)

+1000 on the gimmick call, btw. The most worthwhile features to have (other than good picture/sound quality, obviously) are spare HDMI/USB ports, IMHO.

Or get an Amazon Fire Stick or an android box or the apple thingy or something similar to that Blu-Ray player that had smart apps or setup remote desktop on an old laptop plugged into the TV

Even if there is an insurmountable security problem you can replace the box for a lot less than it costs to change a TV.

Smart TV's are totally insecure. Completely. There's no way I'd entrust my login and password to one. And the history of OS's has shown us that you can't bolt security on afterwards, you pretty much have to design it in from day 1. And does anyone expect TV manufacturers to provide firmware updates for models they don't make anymore ? In November Microsoft patched a 19 year old security flaw

The warning applies to viewers who control their sets using its voice activation feature.

It listens to conversations, and may share any details it hears with Samsung or third parties.

Good TVs have smart bolted on. No avoiding it.

You need processing power and memory to decode HD terrestrial transmissions and show teletext (and operate the record / playback) So most of the smarts are already there, just need to add ports and apps. Soon it'll be next to impossible to get a dumb large screen TV.

Just reinforces the point that it's not worth spending more for smart.

For now only older stock and entry level TV's won't always have smart, but may still be bargains

Most important part of the TV is the LCD panel and it would be nice to know which panel was in which one.

I wouldn't get worked up on the sound quality of cheap flat screens, you're probably going to need some external speakers anyway.
