Is it worth joining for a small suckler farm.

It was compulsory to join it for the BTAP discussion groups and I assume it will be the same for the new groups this year. I've only thirty cows and followers and was always in it and find it useful and interesting but it usually just confirms what you already know about your stock.

It's great for highlighting times between calvings and such. Info is all gathered and easy to use but it's up to you to use it.

Yes, especially if you are breeding your own replacements.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Yes. A great resource for any size farm.

As above we joined because of BTAP & have only 10 suckler cows.
What we find beneficial is helping to select replacements before realising you may of kept the wrong 1. To me it's not the finished artical, but can help.

    Well worth it

For what it costs, I find it very useful. Could easily spend the money on a lot worse:D

disagree, not worth it. This organisation has failed to meet any realistic expectations of it, from a beef perspective. has spend last years beef crisis congratulating itself on progress its made in the dairy herd. The most basic functionality which is available to dairy farmers is not rolled out for beef farmers despite us contributing 50% of their eartag income, why pay twice??
I keep my calving intervals on a basic spreadsheet.

Thanks for the advice. Will probably give it a shot. Some of the reports available may be interesting. I am sure there no more than one could put together with microsoft excel but for the few bob it would save the hassle of that route. My only reservation to it is some of the information been entered and providing the star ratings for the heifers. One mans milky cow may be another mans average if you know what I mean. Its grand if there your own you can be confident its accurate but if you know their background, you will know what there like anyway. Any thoughts on the accuracy of data provided? Thanks lads for the replies. They have been useful

Surely worth the twenty quid for the online service for the first year, then decide wheather to continue or not.

Is it only twenty. Had a belief it was in the couple of hundred range

Data only as accurate as the info you provide about your own cows

Thinking of getting it here. Can you put in animal vaccinations on it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 216 ✭✭tim04750

    No I don't think so.

We find icbf membership excellent but with some room for improvement, eg. A heifer search similar to the bull search would be an added bonus, even if there was an extra cost for this facility

Agree, also treatment would be handy too.
I like when you get the cow report you can see how the offspring preformed even though you sold as weanling, but if the cow left the herd the info is gone.
To me this would help with breeding choices in the future

Was just on line trying to join the Icbf and it appears you can't join by using a debit or credit card only by direct debit is that right or am I missing something?

Don't know about the credit/debit card but if you sign up to pay by direct debit you pay €20 for the first year and €60 per year after that I think.

Have you your password for logging on. You can log on without paying the fee and see things like your basic herd profile. When logged on its easy to find the tab for joining herdplus. Your username is your herd ID number by the way if your haven't got that far.

I'm wrong about this. They stopped the €20 for the first year on 31st December last year. It's €60 per year to join now.

It depends if you are going to use the info or not. If you are willing to sit down and read it then its definatly worth it

    got that sorted thanks

Logged into Herdplus earlier & noticed on the progeny tab that kill-out weight & grades are missing for stock killed in last year.
We generally sell as weanlings & the details would be in herd or sold / exported (now departed), but any historical data is there, is there a reason why this is not up-to-date?
Personally I like to see this, I know how the animal preformed in the herd, and this tells you the final outcome, so you'd know if this is a good breeding selection
