Browns Under Investigation For Cheating

I'd say they are looking at losing a first round pick and a fine of $40m with the media frenzy out there. In-game texting is an outrageous violation of rules... I expect this thread will hit 500 pages by this time tomorrow.

Because an official sending a text to a coach on the sideline directly effects a game the same way Brady throwing underinflated footballs to his receivers does.

    Stop. It's embarrassing.

Isn't what they're accused of some Jerry Jones type trying to run the team from the owners box?

The coaches on the sideline have direct communication with coaches in the boxes above, so I don't know who else it could be sending texts.

Vanolder's defence for the Pats is to look at other violations of the rules and say they're all the exact same as ball tampering.

Though funnily enough, he hasn't yet compared it to spying...

not sure what ball tampering has to do with this thread? no mention of it anywhere by vanolder. Just another thread about a team who are being investigated by the NFL for rules violations.

It's the second thread he's started with the "oooooooooooo look, look over here, there's more cheating going on".

Fair enough, sure go for it. We all agree it's not the same as cheating along the lines of spying or ball tampering though, would we?

If they are found to be guilty it will be a slap on the wrist I would imagine, not a particularly high level offence really, similar to how serious I would take what The Jets are under investigation for. Slaps on the wrist would be all you could really ask for. Then again, in this black and white world, rules are rules.

So does anyone actually have a view on the allegation?

The comments I've read by the owner are devoid of denying the allegations ("if we've done something wrong, then we'll correct it"). So it would appear that there's the possibly that this might lead somewhere.

I do thing if this was the Pats it would get far more coverage. The term "textgate" would be all over the news. But, c'est la vie.

But the Pats and Belichick are both successful and have form for cheating.

The same way a Lance Armstrong story draws more attention than, say the news that Michael Rasmussen doped for his career.

I think the Browns are doing well, they have their own thread on their investigation and everything. Nobody, but nobody gives a **** about the Jets or Johnson breaking the rules and the NFL filing the charges against them :)

It comes with the territory of course, and in response to munstermagic, I have already given my view on it. It is a minor offence imo and a slap on the wrist will suffice, same as the Jets for the record.

So no opinion on the Browns allegation?
I agree that the success of the Pats and spygate being factors in them generating hype/hate when it comes to any news item.
I've seen some of it with Seattle and their recent success and PED violations. A SB win for the Hawks and it'll grow even more.

The only reason the story was put up here at all is because a a Pats fans is trying to deflect from the ball tampering issue. It's the second "but what about" thread he's started in recent days. And if you scan his posts, many of his posts in recent days consist of just that.

The thread is not meant to be a genuine analysis of the Browns, so genuinely analysing the Browns on it is a bit pointless.

    I agree.
But do you think if they had squeaked into the playoffs, and won a narrow wild card game, then it may have generated a lot more hype and maybe calls of tougher punishment would have surfaced.

Whatever the reason (and the drawn out response by the NFL seems to be the biggest deflection), I've twice tried to steer it towards the Browns, and yet it's still about the Pats.

So discussion of it should not take place? Any other teams offences should be brushed under the carpet because multiple "scandals" cannot be discussed at the same time?

Whatever reason he started it for the thread is now here so why not discuss the topic or just ignore the thread? I am certainly not deflecting by having an opinion on it, and rather then deflect I would assume the purpose initially was to highlight the inconsistencies in the media etc when it comes to rule breaking and their coverage.

The Pats are the bigger draw, they are heading to the Supeorbowl, they have been the class of the AFC since that Kansas game, every they do is front page news. This is both a curse and a blessing at times. I have no doubt the media **** storm is having no negative effect on the team at all so why would I worry about it? Nothing wrong with poking fun at hypocrisy though

If the Browns are adjudged to have broken the rules they should get whatever punishment is standard for the type of offence, same goes for any team caught breaking the rules.

A little bit more media interest maybe, if one of the bigger named teams hadnt been caught up in a controversy also ;)

They didn't though so its kinda null and void, success breeds hate/jealousy and puts a big target on your back. The media don't really care about the Browns, the public don't really care about them in fact so unless it was a big story I don't think anybody would go to the trouble of adding a gate to the end of a stupid word and losing their **** all over national television etc

How about teams that cheat again and again?

Have the Browns as much form as, say, the Pats?

Surely repeat offenders will naturally draw more criticism?

Show me a team in the NFL with no black marks against them in their history, why do you keep trying to take this back off topic to the Patriots? There is a thread for that discussion.

No point in me replying to you really is there, you don't have an interest in discussing this topic.

And you are pretending that the topic is a genuine effort to analyse the Browns and has nothing to do with the Pats!

Let's put it a different way, how many threads feigning concern about the "black marks" against other teams did the OP put up before the Pats latest cheating allegations? He's had 2 anyway since then, and lots of posts of that nature.

What does history have to do with it? If a team under the same head coach consistently cheats they should be punished far harsher than a team who has been caught cheating only once under a head coach.

I think it's pretty crazy to say that Team A having been caught cheating in 1967 and then cheated again in 2014 is the same as Team B who were caught cheating in 2013 and then cheated again in 2015 under the same Head coach.

Well as Conor points out, to get back to this serious topic then I think they should be fined all their draft picks forever and they shouldn't be allowed have any cap space.

And that's for a first offence.

If the Browns were found to cheat again and again, like some other franchises, the penalties should ramp up significantly.
