Just bought a cheap run around today, Nice clean car drives well, But absolutely stinks of wet dog. Last owner just used it to bring his dogs to the beach and fuck me it shows.

What's the best way to get rid of the smell? Any special products I could buy or any tips or tricks?

    :(

Kitty litter. Seriously. Cover anywhere the dog would have sat. Leave it overnight and Hoover up.

Air it out as much as possible.

You could also try leaving an open container of sodium bicarbonate in it (good at absorbing smells.

Or get a dog yourself and soon you won't even notice it :)

Put a dead body in the back.....its the only thing that will get rid of a wet dog smell.

Take the seats out and shampoo them, steam clean the floors and the roof, polish the doors and the dash, in other words, valet it to death. Anything else is just wasting your time.

Impossible to get smell of dogs out of a car, only option is insure it for fire and theft, buy a gallon of petrol and a box of maguire and patterson.
Carrying dogs in cars is disgusting.

What does the litter absorb ? Smell or moisture ? is it a drying agent?
I ask as I had small seal leak in car and carpet wet. De humidifier non effective at moment as air temp too cold. thanks

A good poo in the backseat will take care of it.

Baking soda all over the place, leave a few hours then hoover thoroughly. Then follow with carpet/upholstery shampoo. I once got my hands on a bottle of Oust shampoo for pet odours and that was amazing, but don't think you can get it over here. Oust air freshener is brilliant as well. I expect there's an over-priced pet smell remover shampoo you can get in petworld or someplace.

Like Backwardsman says, valet the car top to bottom. Floor carpets and all. Then leave all the doors open on a dry day (ha! bad time of year for that) to dry it out.

Edit: 1001 shampoo is quite good. Don't go near Mr. Muscle or febreze - they just mask the smell.

Seconded... my 16 y/o motor suffered the same damp/smelly problem. I now keep an opened bag of litter* in the rear seat well. No more internal window moisture for me on these damp mornings!

    * Changed every five or six weeks.

You need to balance it out with the opposite, so I'd recommend getting a couple of dry cats in the car.

That's a brilliant idea. I think I went through a car wash with a window open or something equally stupid a few months ago and the car is full of condensation since. Kitty litter it is!

Several pints of Guinness tonight, in the middle of it go off and get a Supermacs 5oz burger meal. More Guinness followed by a sloppy kebab. Buy a hot Indian vindaloo and some dahl to eat at home, eat a jar of prunes while you sit on the couch watching Jeremy Kyle at 4 a.m.

The next day your farts will be so rank thay will block out any odour left from anything or anyone; man or beast.

    Win!

Note: Do not use the car for picking totty up.

Try burning the car seats until there's just metal left. Let me know if it works

Baking soda!!! Brilliant and cheap. I use it on my carpets upstairs . I put a load of cloves in with it. Leave the cloves in soda over night then shake on the carpets, absorbs all the smellies.

Find the offending dogs and get them put down before they do this to anyone else's car!

The smell is in the foam,I doubt you'll get it out.

Open all the windows and drive it into the sea until the sea is at the same level as the roof (make sure you stand on the pedals so you can poke your head out above sea level or you'll drown). Salted water will clean all that crap right up. After about an hour just drive back out again. Sorted.

Put the car up for sale. When people come to see it, ensure that you have febreezed the bejaysus out it so the smell will be gone for 30 mins test driving period. Once sold buy another car.

Thirded! I had a really bad window condensation problem. Tried the kitty litter and it worked! I poured it into a sock like a sausage and tied it at the top, it's not pretty but hey it worked!

Put in a dry dog for a few days, should balance it out

Any cheap remedy on a car interior will not work long term as the smell will return unless the car is cleaned properly using a wet vac/upholstery cleaner and a decent shampoo.

You can buy Bio chemicals from valeting suppliers that will kill the bacterior thats causing the smell.

Speak to the lads on the detailing forum on Boards, they are very helpfull!!

Autoglym,Autosmart, etc will sell products you require.

    Or try http://www.detailingshed.com/

The guy that runs the Detailing shed is sound and happy to help imo.

His name on Boards is Curran!

The reason your car smells bad is because it was valeted and not dried properly. It's the same smell you get when you leave wet clothes in the washing machine for a few days and then dry them.

There's an easy fix, you'll have to get your car valeted again but make sure whoever does it drys it properly.

Must try that myself, there's a small water leak somewhere in the car and it often mists up on a sunny day.

So lighting a small fire on the back seats would be the way to go?
