    Volkswagen Golf 1.6 tdi 105bhp

    and

    Seat leon 1.6 tdi 105bhp

id have about 13000 or so to spend so i should have no problem getting a 2010 or an 2011
depending on which one i go for.. what i want to know is what are the 1.6 engines like to live with? performance, reliability etc etc Any major problems?

    cheers folks :)

Hi Mick it all depends on mileage you will be doing and if you want power or not.

They wouldn't be the highest spec either usually.

1.6 would be struggling a bit compared to the 2.0.

Do you plan on doing long trips or short or just all town?

They are both pretty much the same car underneath. The 1.6 TDi is generally reliable but they can suffer from EGR valve problems. I think VW offer goodwill towards the cost of replacing these though. The only other bugbear is the lack of a 6 speed gearbox. Performance wise the engine is fine in cars the size and weight of the Golf/Leon. The 2.0 TDi with 140bhp or 170bhp would be nicer though.

Have you thought about the civic 1.6 engine? It's 120bhp. I get about 1000km per fill 50 litre tank

well i do about 12000 miles a years and its mixed driving so wouldnt that justify a diesel?

ive a mk4 ibiza and its 100bhp and theres nothing nicer then planting the shoe and getting the burst of power :D

id usually do 1000 miles every month and thats town driving and a couple of long journeys thrown in..

im gonna try and stay away from the 2.0 if i can for insurance purposes

Have you looked at the difference in insurance between the two? If there aren't any specific barriers to you like just having passed your test or something, the difference may be small.

The only problem I have with that generation of Leon is that the interior is terrible, really low rent.

im with axa and im paying 820 on my 1.9 100bhp ibiza and it was a big struggle to get it down from 1050 ive my full license 5 years and ive 3 years no claims which seem to count for nothing.. so i can imagine a 2.0 140bhp would bump its back up to over a 1000 euro so 1.6 would be the cheaper option.

ive seen that alright about the egr problems but people seem to have cured that by getting the car terracleaned.. the golf and leon seem to weight the same and an extra gear on the 1.6 would be a nice touch.

ya i agree with ya there the leons interior does seem very plain but the golfs interior does seem alot sportier and nicer.

A Golf will hold its value a lot better than a Leon of the same era also.

As stated above, they are pretty identical underneath so if you are happy with that its just down to personal preference.

I say go for the Leon. You might get a better specked Leon compared to the Golf you would get for the same money. I myself don,t think the interior is bad or that that engine is underpowered in it.
The best of course is to go look at a few and take them for a drive. Then buy the one that you are happy with, has the spec you want and you like the most.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

They are both ultimately the same car underneath same engine similar reliability. I personally would prefer the golf I think the mk6 was a nice model and they are nicer inside and out that a leon specially in a comfortline upwards spec. The golf will be more resell able by a good amount and make more money but then it costs more to buy.

I suppose the choice is just down to personal preference. As for the 1.6 TDI engine my mother has one in an octavia from new and its 3 years old now 100k km and haven't had even a small issue with it. It's fine to drive reasonably nippy going up through the gears around town but is lacking a bit on overtaking but overall it's a fine engine.

id get a decent spec 2010 golf for between 12 and 13k but then again id get a decent spec 2011 leon for the same money so its just which every car i feel more comfortable with.. but the octavia is that bit heavier then golf and leon so surely its going to be sluggish compared
    to the golf and leon

If you've got a 1.9 TDI Ibiza, I'd say you'll find the 1.6 TDI in a Golf or a Leon to be quite anaemic. I've driven that engine in a Passat and it's dreadful, no oomph whatsoever from it. It's 1.6 petrol Avensis or Passat kind of slow. It's probably nowhere near as bad in a Leon or Golf, but because these cars are a lot heavier than an Ibiza, I think you'll find it a bit of a let-down compared to what you're used to. I'd try and find a 2.0 TDI but that will be quite a challenge in Ireland!

An octavia weighs 1275kg a golf weighs 1269kg so not much in it at all almost nothing. However octavia is 11.4sec to 60mph golf 10.9sec to 60mph. They basically perform the same. But as I said if you pull out to overtake something at 50mph and put your foot to the floor it takes a good bit to start to speed up even in forth.

i was looking at the Gross Vehicle Weight KG instead of the kerb weight thats why i tought the difference was a bit more then that my bad :P its annoying now because they seem like a poor car compared to previous cars like the mk4 and mk5 golf and the mk1 leon.

id get a 2.0 tdi in the north no problem but id pay more then my budget and more in insurance.. il just have to wait and see.. aldo ireland must surely be awash with 1.6 golfs and leons so that cant be that bad.

I have a mk5 golf 1.9tdi and Id still like a mk6 I think they are nice. Having driven my mother octavia loads of times in a lot of weight the 1.6 is more refined and a bit smoother at low speeds around town. But the 1.9 tdi does have the edge when it comes to overtaking.

Instead of starting a new thread I want to ask peoples thoughts on the golf tsi either the 1.2 or the 1.4 would that be a safer bet or are they not much better either??

I can't offer you much info on either engine, other than my mother had a Golf 1.2 TSI DSG in mid 2014 for a week and I found it a very nice drive much to my surprise. It is wonderfully refined around town and wouldn't leave you high and dry overtaking.

She has a 2012 Mazda 3 1.6 petrol automatic at the moment and will potentially replace that with A Golf or Fabia 1.2 TSI this year.

1.4 TSi is alot nicer and more powerful than the 1.2 TSi. 1.4 is also alot more refined.
