My parents currently have sky, but are struggling to justify the cost fianancially so are looking at changing to Saorview, as they are out of contract with Sky cancelling is not an issue, however, is it simply a case of buying a saorview box e.g. the SAORVIEW PLUS 320 HOUR RECORDER - WP6500TTR on sale in Powercity & connecting this to the cables running from the sky dish, or is it more complicated than that?

They are looking to get both the Irish channels & the FTA UK ones also.
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

I'm getting more & more confused when I try to get clear answers through google & reckon the resident experts in here will cut to the chase a lot quicker!!

Saorview will need a box (if the tv doesnt have a tuner), and an aerial.

FTA channels, ie; UK channels, the existing Sky dish and box will work. You could buy a branded Freesat box which will automatically update any change in transponders etc (hassle free), whereas a generic FTA box will give you the same channels but you would have to manually re tune the channels if they were to ever move transponders.

    Yes a little more complicated.
The Saorview channels are not carried Free To Air on the Astra Satellite along with BBC etc so an aerial is required to receive the Saorview channels.

Of course that aerial connection must get to the tuner ....... and if the TV does not have a suitable tuner then an external Set top Box will be required.

Some TVs these days have both Satellite and Terrestrial tuners and for simply watching TV no STB is required.

If recording of TV channels is required then that can add another small bit of complexity ..... the STB needs to be carefully chosen to ensure it provides all that is needed.

So a lot depends on the requirements and also on the capabilities of the existing hardware ..... but either way an aerial is required to receive Saorview channels Free To Air (no paid subscription).
