Council put up aerial but no cables

Hopefully someone might be able to help me out.

My Ma lives in the downstairs two bed apt in Co Limerick. In their infinite wisdom, the Council (Limerick County Council as it was then) put a DTT aerial in the loft of the apt above my mothers.

    And then left.

Does anyone know if they should have co-axed the DTT to both apts on a faceplate? Or did they have any responsibility at all?

The problem of course is I have no authority to drill a hole through the wall and run the cable myself.

I believe there is a relatively strong signal in the area, so she might get away with an indoor one. In the event of "nothing you can do" about the first one can anyone give a recommendation for a good indoor aerial. The apts aren't massive so the smaller, the better!

    Many thanks folks.

Who installed Sky in your mother's apt (mentioned in your other post)? Maybe they could install an external aerial on the same cable.

Don't know who has responsibility regarding the existing DTT aerial.

I installed a satellite dish and aerial for a person in a council house in Clare.

The sky dish is years old - 13 if not 14 years. Installed by Sky.

I can't believe they went to the bother of installing a DTT aerial and then not run the cables.

Talk about a half arsed job!

Are you sure the coco installed this. In my experience councils don't get involved in this sort of stuff. Could it possibly have been a previous tenant?

Indoor aerials only work properly in about 5% of cases.

Could you not drill the hole in the wall without authority?

You can also get flat cable adapters that can go through a closed window.

Yes, 100%. There are a bunch of apts and it was the council who put them in (or at least paid for it).

I believe it was at the behest of one of the local councillors.

The guy upstairs died about a year ago. So new family in there.

Would you let someone into your house to drill a hole out the side of roof / house?

I'm no spring chicken myself so even if they agreed I'd have to borrow a fup off drill to go though the wall, and sealant etc for it. Then run it down from the second floor roof area - properly run ie clipped so I'd need a massive ladder!

I might contact that local councillor and see what he can tell me about it.

I put in a box for a neighbour about a mile away and to my astonishment the cheap indoor aerial worked.

Does anyone have experience of "good" indoor aerials?

No "good" one ones, only less bad ones. Never go for amplified/boosted types.

This one is one of the better ones:

What about an outside aerial on the wall of your mum's apartment? Does it face the transmitter?

Which apt block in Limerick does your parents Live in?..

I can tell you there is only one apartment block that I am aware of that's just been built in Limerick that the council paid for a terrestrial system to be installed most apts around the city were wired for a UPC signal only as the council wouldnt pay for anything ?

Indoor aerials around the city are very hit and miss let me know where you are and I should be able to help you further.

Just An update: after a few phone calls and emails it turns out that they did it while she was on holiday. As they couldn't gain access to here apt they just left it.

They had no answer as to what the cables were just dropped.

Luckily one of my ex classmates happens to be a councillor so he is sorting it out.

Now that that is sorted out, there is another bloody mess I need to fix. It's a separate topic so I'll start a new thread.

Many thanks to those of you who took the time to repond to my initial query.
