Am I mad?

I want to ditch my UPC broadband, it's just way to expensive 240mb is a great speed but for 50€ P/M or 600€ P/A it's a 240mb line that I really don't need.

I get around 20mb on my mobile phone via 4G when it's on the 4G network and around 2MB with a good ping when on the H/H+ network. Note these speeds are tethered with my computer which is what I want to do.

I want to ditch the UPC and I have a pre pay account with all you can eat data on 3 for 20€ P/M. I know there's a fair usage limit of 15GB but I don't think I will go over 15GB. I mainly browse the internet but I do stream a lot of stuff online.

    Any options ?

The highlighted bit would be my main concern. If you can live with the slower speed, grand, but streaming a lot of stuff and broadband caps are not compatible IMO.

If you go into your UPC account, you can see how much you use every month; I wouldn't have classed myself as a heavy user of streaming but I'm up around 40GB every month.

    Yes, you are mad!

3/4G really aren't broadband and streaming video is one of the most bandwidth intensive tasks you can do!!!

First thing you should do is log into myupc and check your monthly usage.

Second, UPC 240mb/s is €45 per month, not 50 or 60!

Also if you call and say you are thinking of leaving, they will normally give you it for something like €35 for the first 6 months and €45 after all.

You also have the option of the 120mb/s pack for €40 or the 60mb/s pack (with a 30GB fup) for €35

Thanks guys. I think I will be sticking with UPC, I checked my usuage even before you mentioned it and emmm can anyone explain this?

My current so far this month is
    Downloaded:36.91 GB
    Uploaded: 0.56 GB
Total usage in current billing period: 37.47 GB
    But holy **** last month
    Period 07 Dec - 06 Jan
    Download 155.57 GB
    Upload 426.23 GB
Total usage in current billing period 581.80 GBWhat program would be causing such a high upload rate? Should I ring UPC to ask them? I can imagine I uploaded anywhere near half 1TB of data considering I only hold 42GB of data on my computer.

Here is my current pricing with UPC for fiber power 120MB

    Description Fibre Power 120
    Quantity 1
    Dates 07 Jan - 06 Feb 2015
    Amount €52.49
Should I just ring them up and say I am thinking of canceling or ask to be moved to the cheaper fiber power 120€

Also anyway to bring this down?

    Description Digital Max
    Quantity 1
    Dates 07 Jan - 06 Feb 2015
    Amount €42.50

I have one multiroom viewing which I am going to cancel as I myself can get the stuff online. Just the mother isn't too please with the pricing on the UPC and wants me to sort it out for her.

    Thanks all.

Did you download a few movies that much, or a few games?

It could also be an indication that you have a virus or has been compromised. UPC won't be able to tell you this. You should do a full virus scan of your PC and update all your software.

BTW this is why being on an unlimited account is better. You would have been charged thousands of Euros for that if you had been on wifi!!

I'd ring UPC and tell them that you have gotten a better offer from Eircom for a bundle of TV, phone and BB (check Eircoms bundles online) and ask them what they can do to match that.

I have no anti virus software installed on this PC. I am the only one with access to it and wouldn't download anything stupid so hardly anything. I did download u Torrent for downloading a few big video files, but I deleted them soon after. Haven't used uTorrent in a good while and turn it off when it turns on at start-up, completely uninstalled it yesterday when I seen the massive upload. I installed XMBC onto the PC also use un-block.us for switching my DNS.

What Antivirus software is good ?

I find Microsoft Security Essentials does a good job and best of all it is free.

    I downloaded BullGaurd. Found a few issues, nothing that I would imagine would cause the massive upload data;

Run Malwarebytes and ADWCleaner as well now. That level of upload and no security software screams botnet to me.

Will do. But how did it get in? uTorrent is only thing I can think of.

Seeing as you say that you shut down UTorrent as soon as it automatically starts up when you turn on the computer would suggest that you have not changed any of the default settings on UTorrent so I would say when you were downloading whatever files you were getting, UTorrent was seeding stuff on your computer at an unrestricted speed (whatever you max upload speed is) because I'm making the educated case that you did not state any upload limit speeds nor specify what can and cannot be shared from your computer.

This may not be the sole reason for such high upload rates but I would be confident that it is at least a major part of it.

As for you saying that you have no antivirus installed because "I am the only one with access to it" - that is really bad attitude to have. The virus's don't arrive via other people like germs. They arrive in through your internet connection. Even the most diligent and careful user is at extremely high risk of getting virus's or other cyber attacks with no anti-virus installed.

Seeing as you are very careful (generally) with what you do on the web, whatever you downloaded via Utorrent is likely to have done the damage. UTorrent is only the transmission method of getting your video files to your computer. It is those files that very often are infected.

Never edited any settings within uTorrent. Also didn't mean it in a bad attitude I meant it as in I only have access to the machine and the stock anti virus from Windows I thought was doing a good job. But I won't be going again with any antivirus. Was a bad idea.

Microsoft security essentials is not very good these days, it's used as the baseline against which all other AV's are rated. Bitdefender free is the best freebie I've used and one of the few that doesn't actually try and install extra unwanted programs while you're installing the AV. It's consistently rated with the very best AV's for detections.

Identity theft and especially theft of banking details or any details, passwords, account numbers pertaining to financial transactions or gaining access to financial records/accounts we are told is the fastest growing criminality aimed at computer or internet users. These kinds of attacks can get on your system in a variety of ways, uTorrent being only one of many avenues. E-mail, dodgy pop-ups ect are others and I am not knowledgeable enough to list of know of all the ways to infect a person’s computer. Look at the number of security holes Microsoft patch on a weekly basis and one can see how vulnerable a system can be to determined criminals. In this event I think a modest financial outlay on a good internet security application is not a bad idea. The freebies are not bad, Bit defender and AVG being good options but these are only antivirus products so do not protect your system fully. Most of the good Internet security providers allow you a 30 day free trial of their products, this is a good way to have a look at what might suite you. I myself use Kaspersky Internet Security which I find works well and more importantly is easy to configure.

You really need an anti virus programme. No matter how good you are there are really smart people out there trying to f**k up your day. Having used several brands over many years I've settled on Bitdefender security suite. Its not heavy dose not savage system resources and is reasonably priced. Don't purchase direct from BitDefender try downloadcrew.co.uk as they are much cheaper.
If you don't want the burden of forking out for AV go get a free one before someone or thing gets your system.
