    hi all..

never used a teaser bull in my life, going to use a lad this year, a brown swiss,

    few questions to ask ye

    1. how many cows to 1 teaser ... I will have everything going well 80 cows for serving to ai for 6 to 7 weeks .... is this too many for 1 teaser 14 months...

    2. do ye use chin ball and tail paint

    3. does a teaser bring cows in quicker as sort of bull effect

    4. would it be a good idea ta let teaser run with cows 2 weeks before ai starts and let then rest for 2 weeks while a lot of cows bulling and then back in for 4 to 5 weeks as sort of bull effect ta bring cows bullying quicker

I used a teaser with paint chin-ball marker for the last few years. Only 15 or so sucklers here, but I imagine 80 cows would be too much. I imagine closer to 40 would be the limit, especially for a young bull.

Ya run him well before the start of the breeding season. It will give you a chance to see how he is working and also when to expect certain cows to come bulling again.

One thing to be aware of is that a teaser will follow a cow well before she is in standing heat. I've seen them follow a cow for 3 full days before she'll stand to be mounted. So you'll need to do a bit of detective work.

Pick a bull that is already mounting cows, has a bit of height and well lively on his feet. You don't want a lazy one that will be lying down all the time. Better the type of animal that would jump a wall for you no bother. Get him snipped 6 weeks before using too. It takes that long to flush through the fertile semen.

Better with a hardy agey teaser with that many cows, although dairy cows tend to pick less on young bulls than sucklers.

And wait till the cow stands.,..

I know a man outside Ballinagh with two hardy teasers, if your interested...

    1. The teaser is normally put in after 3 weeks or so because there will be enough cows bulling in the first round for heats to show up. I run two with my cows just in case one gets injured and leave them off at the start of bulling. Where the teaser will be worth his weight in gold is with silent heats and when there is only one or two cows bulling, he will show them up very well.
2.Use a chin ball marker, it is essential.
    3. I haven't heard of any bull effect like with rams and ewes.
    4. That sound like a plan. If the teaser is young then he will get tired, i normally run two, an older and younger and sell on the worst one for working and vasectomise a bull calf again the next year.

Hello All. With vasectomised bulls how long after getting the snip do you wait before letting them in with cows. I heard they are still fertile few a while after it's done?

Too late to do it now so. Will be bulling cows from June. The one I have is dangerous

If he's dangerous give him the road, vasectomising won't make him any quieter, still a bull.

I presumed it was his vasectomised bull was dangerous and he wanted to get a replacement done.

    Makes more sense!

We vectomized bulls here this year for the first time. They're with the heifers at the moment. Bit disappointed they only marked the obvious ones. We've scratch cards on the heifers too. Nearly every heifer has got a straw so I'm hoping they'll come into there own for the repeats.

Gone away from em now with heifers, using a sync programme instead as less second guessing and work involved in em. They should work better for repeats but for the first round should be enough activity within the group. They do help with cows when things go quiet alright
